On the anniversary of his father’s passing, Jon leaves home in search of answers.

The land is full of mystery and intrigue, and Jon wants to explore it all with the dream of one day becoming a sorcerer. But when Jon receives an invite to the castle for training, he starts to believe there has to be a catch.

A long time ago, Jon’s father was once a guard near the capital city. Now Jon finds himself back where his father used to work, and he’s beginning to learn why his father had wanted to raise him away from here. He will discover that, along with certain threats to the kingdom, there are also many magical arts to learn. Some seem stronger than others, but all have their use. Jon must come to understand the complexities of sorcery as he uncovers the mysteries and threats to the kingdom. But he also must learn to deal with the other sorcerers who have come to train at the castle at the same time as him...some of whom are hard to trust.

This new cycle is encapsulating but the delivery by Simon Vance takes all the B T Narro books to a new level. I can’t wait for the next book to be recorded! If only they would get Simon Vance to re-record the original cycles, I would buy them all in an instant!

I don’t normally write reviews, but I thought this one was worth it. I read lots of fantasy and this one stands out for it’s unusual magic system and character development. Simon Vance does a great job of bringing the story alive through his performance and the plot has left me buying the next one straight away. If you like fantasy, this is a great choice.

Unusually gripping

A Great story and excellent narration by Simon. On my 5th listen of the series.

Brilliant

Many of the best magic systems are those that keep it simple, coupled with broadness of field and gradual revelation. The King's Sorcerer does this all, with the system being completely unique and interesting and letting the protagonist's characteristic strengths shine. The plot, too, is rather simple. A kingdom or city under siege isn't anything new, and yet the excellent story telling, world building and realistic characters sets it apart as a very worth-while and entertaining book. There is an incredible balance achieved between the perceptions that we are hearing the story of John, the story of the kingdom, the story of the king, and the conclusion of... well, that'd be a bit too close to a spoiler, I think.

I never used to pay too much attention to narrators aside from trying to filter out bothersome quirks so that they don't ruin the story, but Simon Vance is fantastic. I will look twice at any potential purchase in future, if he is narrating it.
