Summary

A SWEEPING NOVEL RICH IN PASSION AND LEGEND FROM SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLING AUTHOR, PHILIPPA GREGORY
‘This is a man’s world, Jacquetta, and some women cannot march to the beat of a man’s drum. Do you understand?’

1435. Rouen. Jacquetta of Luxembourg is left a wealthy young widow when her husband, the Duke of Bedford, dies. Her only friend in the great household is Richard Woodville, the Duke’s squire, and it is not long before the two become lovers and marry in secret.

The Woodvilles return to the Lancaster court, where Jacquetta becomes close friends with young King Henry VI’s new queen. But she can sense a growing threat from the people of England, and the danger of royal rivals. The king slides into a mysterious sleep; Margaret, his queen, turns to untrustworthy favourites for help; and Richard, Duke of York, threatens to overturn the whole kingdom for his rival dynasty, the House of York.

Jacquetta fights for her king, her queen and her daughter Elizabeth Woodville, for whom she senses an extraordinary future.

What made the experience of listening to The Lady of the Rivers the most enjoyable?

It was wonderfully narrated and so very interesting.

What did you like best about this story?

Putting it in historical context - If you haven't watched The White Queen series then it helps to put this in context - also related to Philippa Gregory's historical novel series The Cousins' War.

Have you listened to any of Tracy-Ann Oberman’s other performances? How does this one compare?

No, but would again.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

If I could have.

Any additional comments?

Brilliant - one of the best audio books I've listened to.

Captivating

So sad that the unabridged book is not available. More than half the story is missing. I have noticed this has happened with 2 other favourite authors. Those of us capable of assimilating longer books find this disappointing. Fortunately there are other platforms to obtain the full book.

This is an excellent audible book. I’ve already read the paper book and this is the best audible book I’ve had so far.
Tracy-Ann Oberman was first rate !
Good characterisations, and her voice is expressive and well modulated. I am now going to look for other audible books she has narrated. Her reading made it for me.

First class !

Annoyingly, I didn’t realise this was abridged when I bought it. It’s about 5 hours long. The full version is read by Bianca Amati and is over 19 hours long.

Abridged so three times shorter.
