Summary

`Telling my story of first, surviving genocide and then, as a captive of ISIS is not easy, but people must know.' The remarkable and courageous story of Nadia Murad, a twenty-three-year-old Yazidi woman who is working with Amal Clooney to challenge the world to fight ISIS on behalf on her people.

With a foreword by Amal Clooney

A Nobel Peace Prize nominee and the first Goodwill Ambassador the Dignity of Survivors of Human Trafficking of the United Nations and winner of the Vaclav Havel Human Rights Prize, Nadia Murad is a courageous young woman who has endured unimaginable tragedy (losing eighteen members of her family) and degradation through sexual enslavement to ISIS. But she has fought back.

This inspiring memoir takes us from her peaceful childhood in a remote village in Iraq through loss and brutality to safety in Germany. Courage and testimony can change the world: this is one of those books.

One of the saddest stories a human can tell... Story of horrific cruelty. I wish this was just a fiction, but it's so brutally real it hurts. Skilfully written, excellently narrated. 10/10

Heartbreaking. Important. Excellently narrated.

Really powerful and a really sad story that Nafia, the Yazidis and so many people had to endure. Truly Shocking. Ilyana's voice and tempo is brilliant for this book. A truly memorable listen and I am so sorry that it is all true. Shame when some people channel all their political energy into events happening domestically when a World events like this receive far less than the attention it deserves.

VERY POWERFUL STORY

I could not stop listening, what an inspiration this young woman is to humankind. I cannot begin to imagine how awful her world must have been and how she has overcome this to fight for human rights.

I read this memoir with great interest from the opening foreward by Amal Clooney. Nadia’s story was insightful at the horrors that existed under ISIS occupation and rule. It was hurtful to know that men can treat women in such a way and be the cause of needless suffering to a group of people, preying on vulnerable women to feel powerful. I’m glad Nadia’s story turned into something positive for her, but her grief and her loss is something no one should have to go through. Thank you Nadia for sharing your story and shedding light on the darkest parts of society.
