About this listen
Please be aware, the below contains spoilers if you have not listened to Vol 1,2 and 3!
It's been six months since Lilly Hooper reunited with her family, friends, and magic. The Arcane Realm offers freedom and safety for all the witches who are rebuilding their lives and healing. But things are not as straightforward or as easy as they all hoped they would be. The wounds of the past still linger, and Lilly isn't the only one struggling to forget the blood-soaked roads that led them to their new haven. Somewhere, forces are stirring. Forces that refuse to let the past stay in the past. But with her friends and family by her side, Lilly is ready to face whatever may come next. It can't be any worse than what she's faced before... right?
This is a novella and follows on from the third instalment of The Last Witch. It is a dark paranormal fantasy romance. Not intended for those under the age of 18.
©2022 M. J. Lawrie (P)2024 M. J. LawrieBy the time you reach Volume Four (the novella), which is only around four hours long, the story shifts focus to the new realm, magical creatures like dragons, and a quieter, simpler way of living — which is very much my kind of book. I didn’t find this installment as intense as the earlier ones, but coming straight from Book Three, the remnants of the trauma from the previous story were definitely still lingering.
This series is definitely one of the darker fantasy stories I’ve listened to. The level of suffering the characters go through is significant, with a huge amount of loss throughout the series. I would strongly recommend checking trigger warnings before starting.
Throughout the books, I sometimes struggled with the choices made by the MFC, Lilly. At times her decisions felt impulsive, and she often seemed to run straight into danger without thinking things through. I did try to remind myself that she is still a young character who has experienced a huge amount of trauma, but it was something that occasionally frustrated me across the series.
That said, the character building throughout these books is excellent. M. J. Lawrie does a great job of making the characters feel vivid and real. I genuinely felt like I could picture them clearly and understand who they were — both the good characters and the bad.
For me, this series is far more torment-heavy than spice-heavy, focusing much more on the darker emotional journey of the characters rather than romance.
I will say that you will probably need a bit of a palate cleanse after finishing this series, as the torment and emotional weight really stuck with me. I also listened to all four books back-to-back (which I tend to do), without taking a break between them. In hindsight, that probably made the intensity hit even harder.
Because of how heavy and intense parts of the story were, I can’t say this is a series I would personally re-listen to. Not because it isn’t well written — it absolutely is — but because some moments were very difficult to listen to.
Overall, I’m glad I finished the series and saw how everything concluded. If you enjoy very dark fantasy with deep character work and high emotional stakes, The Last Witch will definitely take you on an intense journey.
