About this listen

Captain Jack Aubrey, a brilliant and experienced officer, has been struck off the list of post-captains for a crime he did not commit. His old friend Stephen Maturin, usually cast as a ship's surgeon to mask his discreet activities on behalf of British intelligence, has bought for Aubrey his former ship the Surprise to command as a privateer, more politely termed a letter of marque. Together they sail on a desperate mission against the French, which, if successful, may redeem Aubrey from the private hell of his disgrace.

o'Brian is the absolute master of the naval yarn, in the footsteps of Forester. what an epic journey the series creates! quite remarkable. best listened to in sequence perhaps. only one tiny quibble: ric Jerrom is an excellent narrator, with a great range of voices and accents but he clearly does not speak French, and the mispronunciations are mildly annoying and should have been picked up. otherwise, perfection.

another great story.

I eke out my listening to this series as they are my favourite of the varied genres which form my audible companions. However I had to break with tradition having come to the end of The Reverse of the Medal, I simply could not wait to discover what would happen to our protagonists so listened immediately. Wonderful! An action packed episode with a great finale! I shall wait for two months to hear the next book

I had to keep listening …

One of the best series of novels I've ever read or listened to. This episode does not disappoint and as all the books have done, especially after the first couple, leaves you satisfied with the story but eager to get the next one. This and the previous few take place in a rather surreal timeline, but don't ponder on that, enjoy the wonderful narration of Jerrom and the equally wonderful writing.

Another compelling and superbly read episode
