About this listen

The best-selling classic tale of a woman scorned, from a much-loved British author.

Ruth Patchett never thought of herself as particularly devilish. Rather the opposite in fact - simply a tall, not terribly attractive woman living a quiet life as a wife and mother in a respectable suburb. But when she discovers that her husband is having a passionate affair with the lovely romantic novelist Mary Fisher, she is so seized by envy that she becomes truly diabolic. Within weeks she has burnt down the family home, collected the insurance, made love to the local drunk and embarked on a course of destruction and revenge.

A blackly comic satire of the war of the sexes, The Life and Loves of a She Devil is the fantasy of the wronged woman made real.

A premise as old as can be with a fascinating twist. Really enjoyed the character development and different take on this kind of story.

Unexpectedly Fascinating

I was looking for a book similar to “How to kill your family” and found this classic. Narrator a bit annoying but got use to it quickly. The story is fun and evil, made me smile a lot!

Fun feminine book

A Fantastic and compelling story.
Read by someone better suited to read children’s books, Enid Blyton perhaps?
I battled through the Am-Dram voice driven on by Fay Weldon’s brilliant writing.
Would thoroughly recommend this title despite the jarring reader ..,worth the plunge

A Brilliant story and Beautifully written book despite the narrator’s pantomime rendering …

loved it. I struggled with the narrator's voice at first but got used to it. the story just got more and more outrageous but I didn't want to stop reading. pointless end to her search of happiness but inevitable. a good read.
