About this listen

The fantasy of the wronged woman made real: wild funny and true. "The fun grows steadily blacker and wilder." The Guardian

When Ruth Pratchett discovers her husband is having a passionate affair with the lovely romantic novelist Mary Fisher, she is so seized by envy she becomes truly diabolic, embarking on a course of destruction which brings those around her their just deserts and herself an amazing reward. This is the fantasy of the wronged woman made real: wild, funny, true.

Written so long ago but still strong wisdom for women and men on both their differences and the underlying truth. Women are both mens power and their weakness.

Still a great story with wisdom

I love this book and would really have liked it to have been unabridged. Patricia Hodge reads perfectly.

The full story!

My only criticism, was that this is only available here narrated by Patricia Hodge in an abridged version.

The narration was perfect

A downtrodden and meek giantess finds her view of herself and of the world turned on its head by a chance insult from her husband. She discovers that far from being a mere victim of the inequalities of the world and her husband's infidelities she is in fact a She-devil.

And She-Devils are capable of great deeds and can transform not only themselves but the world around them.

With glorious machinations and delightful wickedness the story is a joyful tale of revenge and one I have never grown sick of.

Despite taking the role of Ruth's nemesis in the TV adaptation Patricia Hodge makes a wonderful She-Devil and her reading of the book is perfect. The only negative is that it is not unabridged. However it is still a wonderful listen.

A dark wonderful and witty tale of transformation

Patricia Hodge reads brilliantly as the bitter wife. I love that she played Mary Fisher in the TV series.

What a wonderfully devilfish fantasy!
