Drawing from D.W. Griffith's Birth of a Nation, Sinclair Lewis's Elmer Gantry, and Franz Kafka's The Metamorphosis, the novel traces the life cycle of a fabricated weapon through four perspectives: the technician who builds it, the official it destroys, the journalist who publishes it, and the public that consumes it.
