About this listen

Be careful what you wish for....

Long ago, Andrew made a childhood wish and kept it in a silver box. When it finally comes true, he wishes he hadn’t....

Long ago, Ben made a promise, and he had a dream: to travel to Africa to volunteer at a lion reserve. When he finally makes it, it isn’t for the reasons he imagined....

Ben and Andrew keep meeting in unexpected places, and the intense relationship that develops seems to be guided by fate. Or is it? What if the very thing that draws them together is tainted by past secrets that threaten everything? A dark, consuming drama that shifts from Zimbabwe to England and then back into the past, The Lion Tamer Who Lost is also a devastatingly beautiful love story, with a tragic heart....

A great listen from Louise Beech, so well narrated, I sailed through it. Simultaneously heart breaking and uplifting - a modern tragedy. Loved it.

Sad but fabulous

What an amazing listen. I had no preconceptions when I started this book, other than having heard good things about it. It is an amazing love story which takes place in both Zimbabwe and England (Hull). Louise Beech’s writing is so beautiful and emotive. I could picture the lion reserve in Zimbabwe so vividly. I loved the way that the chapters began with an excerpt from Andrew’s book.

The characters are perfectly portrayed too and as the book went on I became totally engrossed in the lives of Ben and Andrew. Even Ben’s dad, Will, started to grow on me by the end.

The book deals with some difficult subjects very well. It is a moving read which will stay with me for a long time.

Beautiful and Heartbreaking

Really enjoyed this book! The characters where very relatable and the story so poignant. Loved being in two different countries throughout the book, the text and narration I could relate to coming from Hull. Superb

Most of the time I have a feeling if the book is good from the very first chapter, in this case, I couldn't push much further. It feel unpleasant, close to painful. Just my subjective opinion.
