About this listen

A charming and uplifting story, perfect for fans of A Man Called Ove or Jonas Jonasson.

Biddy Weir is a quirky girl.

Abandoned by her mother as a baby, and with a father who's not quite equipped for the challenges of modern parenting, Biddy lives in her own little world, happy to pass her time painting by the sea and watching the birds go by. That is, until she meets Alison Flemming.

Because there are a few things about Biddy that aren't normal, you see. And Alison isn't afraid to point them out to the world.

All of a sudden, Biddy's quiet life is thrown into turmoil. If only there was someone to convince her that, actually, everyone's a little bit weird....

A story of abuse and survival, of falling down and of starting again, and of one woman's battle to learn to love herself for who she is, The Lonely Life of Biddy Weir is Lesley Allen's startlingly honest debut novel.

"If you're a bit of a weirdo you will love Biddy Weir." (Ian Sansom, best-selling author of The Norfolk Mystery)

"A wonderful debut: poignant, powerful and moving, with ripples of dark humour." (Colin Bateman)

"I'm a little bit in love with Biddy Weir. In her, Lesley Allen has created a character who is the embodiment of all our adolescent insecurities." (Bernie McGill, author of The Butterfly Cabinet)

To all the B.Ws out there.... Hope you find the sun shining on you after the gray clouds of pain pass. What a triumph of a book.

A touching story, relatable also to those who are not exactly in Biddy’s situation, but find themselves struggling with bias and stigma. At the beginning I struggled a bit with the narrator’s accent as English is not my first language, but once I got used to it I appreciated it hugely because it’s fitting with the context of the novel and it gives it the right flavour. I’d also recommend this novel to a young audience- as it could be educational.

If you reexamine your childhood you will find BW's all along the way. Please pass this story on to educate others of the damage and repercussions of passive inaction that enables bullies to hurt when you might be the answer to the problem.

An insight into the 70s schooling but not a nice one. Being a child of the 70s I could see those children in my class that may have been lonely and I feel sad. I'm glad her talent got her through. Great story and narration. I loved it.
