Summary

I've read more than a couple of LGBT themed books dealing homophobia and ignorance surrounding sexuality, towards a gay character. This is the first time I I can remember it being about bisexuality, and what bisexuals go through. I found myself feeling sorry for Jake, and the way he was often treated by his family. I felt like this book took a realistic approach (not a Disney one) to a young man who is still discovering who he is, and it's more than just his sexuality, but who he is as a friend and as a son, brother, etc. I'm missing a lot out about the plot intentionally because I'm not that skilled at leaving reviews without spoiling something. So I have tried to keep it broad and vague.
However, I enjoyed this story, and would recommend it for others.

A very different book compared to what I usually listen to about A family and their friends. It felt true and honest.

The main characters are the two brothers and their relation to each other or rather the lack there of. It’s easy to draw wrong conclusions about people when you assume things based on behavior and lack of communication.

The only thing that was a bit difficult for me to grasp was that it was written from various points of views. But at the same time it gave the story a broader perspective.

I really enjoyed this book. It treads the line I want in an LGBT story - plenty of laughter, tugged heartstrings and an ending that at least leaves room for hope rather than slipping into despair or death (high bar, I know!).
But I also really like its breadth away from just one or two central characters to look at the different relationships and people.
The family/sibling dynamic is achingly, hauntingly real to me as a repressed millennial with a much louder and apparently more sure of themselves younger sibling. And while I naturally identify most with introverted millennial and repressed oldest child Jake, its refreshing to see the teenagers portrayed as relatively whole people with real legitimate feelings and perspectives.
This story has so many characters that get to be more complex than their 2D archetype. They get to be messy and imperfect and human.

So, I actually got this book because of the narrator and his work on a previous title but, I still really liked this book. I was actually pretty sad to see it end. definitely worth a listen and the narrator is A+++
