About this listen

Everyone wants handsome adventurer John Huxley to settle down - family, friends, London society. Everyone except John. He's evaded too many scheming title huntresses to trust in happily ever after. Now, a vow made to a dying friend has him locked in a land dispute with a stubborn Scot who offers one way out: Win the Highland Games. John likes a challenge, but this one's impossible. Still, with training from the Scot's stepdaughter, victory might be within reach. He only has to teach the fiery, foulmouthed, breeches-wearing lass how to land a lord. It seems "impossible" is just getting started.

Everyone calls her Mad Annie. True, her best friend is a ghost. And yes, her greatest talents involve cooking for giants and taunting ridiculously handsome Englishmen. But she's not mad - she's desperate. To save her friend, Annie must marry a lord. The trouble is no lord will look twice at a hoyden like her. This calls for "Lady Lessons", and she knows just the uptight Englishman to provide them.

When Annie's family is targeted by a dangerous enemy, John is tempted to stay, to fight, and to win the greatest prize of all: a fiery lass' tender, loyal heart.

Contains mature themes.

TW: Off-page sexual assault mentioned near the end of the book. (TBH I questioned the necessity of this)

Okay, so I adored this. I was going to rate it a 3 but then I remembered I actually enjoyed this book despite the subplots. And yes, there were A LOT.

Headstrong, foul-mouthed, red-haired Scottish FMC and a proper Englishman in the Highlands? What's not to love?

Love love love the VA’s Scottish accent for the FMC.

Loved every second of the story. This new series is a continuation of the series Rescued from Ruin. It is about John Huxley of the lovely Huxley family. I love them. There were quite a few hilarious one liners said mostly by Annie, she was sob.c sweet and funny, she really made me laugh.
The narrator was ok but at times Annie's voice sounded like a cartoon character and John's voice sounded like a16 year old boy most of the time and in the beginning like a spoilt 16 year old, not a nice big tall strapping gentleman. At times when he was supposed to sound sexy, he wasn't sexy at all, he sounded really pathetic.
I'm an addict of audio books and have listened to hundreds of books and I have quite a few favourite narrators but Ruth Urquhart is not one of them. My favourite narrators are mostly male. But there are a few female narrators I like also.
If it wasn't for her mispronunciations of any words with an A, I preferred the previous narrator Mary Sarah, of the series Rescued from Ruin. Pity about the pronunciation of her words though. Now on to the next one.

Loved the story

This was an enjoyable story. Few niggles with it, but nothing major. I’ll get more in the series.

Some fantastic one liners, it did make me giggle a lot.

The writing was interesting as it was different from the usual.

It felt more like a story being told around a campfire & where you had to prompt the teller to get more details.

A lot of the plot happened "off-book", as it were, so you were told after the fact & even when the action was "on-book" it felt more like a dream sequence than the usual immersion into a book... it never felt really present, it always felt like you were being told a "once upon a time tale..."

I'm guessing a lot of that is because most of the action had more to do with Broderick than John or Annie.

I really liked John & boy did I have a sexy image of him in mind, Annie did seem a bit immature at times, but a sweetie pie!

I didn’t really like the lead up to their first time... it felt more like forcing the issue than an inevitable come together of 2 people who love each other.

I also didn't really get why Annie became so angry when she finds out the secret.

I think she expected far too much... because if even the people who believe in the same things that she does, call her Mad Annie as they think she's making it up, why would a non-believer just take her word for it without questioning it?! It didn't really make sense to me!

Also how they figure out who's the villain was a lot more of a plot dictates than because of any reason that makes any sense at all.

but on to Broderick's story... as that was the story that captivated me more :)

an entertaining read

I really enjoyed this book; the mix of characters, the plot and the sub plots.
I am looking forward to book two now and hoping it continues with the adventures, humour, great plot & a whole range of both familiar and new characters.
My preference is usually for male narrators but I quite liked Ruth Urquart.
Enjoy your listen.
