About this listen

GRITTY, NEWCASTLE-SET CRIME FOR FANS OF IAN RANKIN AND ROBERT GALBRAITH.

WINNER OF THE CWA JOHN CREASEY DAGGER AND OF THE SPECSAVERS DEBUT CRIME NOVEL AWARD. A THEAKSTON'S NEW BLOOD AUTHOR FOR 2020 AND SHORTLISTED FOR THE THEAKSTON'S OLD PECULIER CRIME NOVEL OF THE YEAR AWARD.

'Fresh, original, authentic and gritty - should be an instant classic' LEE CHILD

'Intricate, expertly paced with a shocking conclusion ... Jimmy is a character you root for from page one ... Simply supberb' M. W. CRAVEN, author of THE PUPPET SHOW

It started with a splash. Jimmy, a homeless veteran grappling with PTSD, did his best to pretend he hadn't heard it - the sound of something heavy falling into the Tyne at the height of an argument between two men on the riverbank. Not his fight.

Then he sees the headline: GIRL IN MISSING DAD PLEA. The girl, Carrie, reminds him of someone he lost, and this makes his mind up: it's time to stop hiding from his past. But telling Carrie, what he heard - or thought he heard - turns out to be just the beginning of the story.

The police don't believe him, but Carrie is adamant that something awful has happened to her dad and Jimmy agrees to help her, putting himself at risk from enemies old and new. But Jimmy has one big advantage: when you've got nothing, you've got nothing to lose.

This a great start to a new series. A different perspective to the normal detective novel. Jimmy is ex naval police , damaged by his experiences in the Falklands war. He is living rough on the streets of Newcastle. After he witnesses a murder he teams up with the daughter of a man who is missing to solve the case. This book is set in my home town and the characters surrounding Jimmy are richly drawn . I hope this is the first of a new series. I would like to know how Jimmy gets on . David Nellist does a fine job as narrator, he is a Geordie so gets the accent spot on .

Great start

I came across this title while looking at nominations for awards. I don't recall exactly what the book was nominated for but it got a 'highly commended' or something similar so I took a look at other reviews and decided to get the audible version. I'm so glad that I did. The storyline is original and excellently constructed. The main characters are engaging and realistic and the narration is very well done. I was impressed by the research that must have gone into both developing one of the characters and the main storyline. I don't want to give any spoilers but if you like good quality crime fiction that isn't all blood and guts then 'The Man on the Street' is a great book to listen to.

So different and so very good.
