About this listen

The Devil comes to Moscow, but he isn't all bad; Pontius Pilate sentences a charismatic leader to his death, but yearns for redemption; and a writer tries to destroy his greatest tale, but discovers that manuscripts don't burn. Multi-layered and entrancing, blending sharp satire with glorious fantasy, The Master and Margarita is ceaselessly inventive and profoundly moving. In its imaginative freedom and raising of eternal human concerns, it is one of the world's great novels.

Well written and captivating book - though I think would be all the more enjoyable if I had a more complete grasp of Russian history at this point, the broad strokes of the satire I get, but I am sure some of the more subtle nuances are being missed by me. On the whole, interesting, vivid and colourful, worth a listen.

I've read The Master and Margarita twice, but it's such a complex story that I thought I would still get a lot out of listening to it as an audiobook. In fact, I listened to it twice in quick succession - and it just gets better each time. Julian Rhind-Tutt's narration is superb, very sympathetic to the nuances of all the characters. This gets a massive recommendation from me.

My favourite book, brilliantly read

The different voices projected in this performance were quite jarring. I'm sure the narrator had thought this through and decided that Woland's accomplices deserved the voices and accents he chose, but they were so off-putting that I almost stopped listening after a couple of hours. I had read the book before and knew that the writing would shine through eventually, but Mr Rhind-Tutt nearly ground Bulgakov's masterwork down. Be warned. If you haven't read the book before, this may ruin your appreciation of this wonderful piece of literature.

Never heard of this story and never read anything by the author so took a chance based on my experience of the narrator.
A very well read, very intriguing novel. It seems much more modern than 1941, which I think is when it was written.

Unusual

Easily one of my favourite audio books Bugalov’s satirical tale of the Devil appearing in 1930’s Stalinist Russia juxtaposed with an author’s uncannily accurate account of the meeting between Pontus Pilate and Jesus of Nazareth is a rare find a book of quality something to treasure and pass on to friends. Julian Rhind-Tutt‘s narration is masterful his delivery is quiet and dreamy at times rising to pitch perfect understated sarcasm to laugh out loud funny a real joy to listen to .The perfect combination of a unique wonderful book and excellent presentation
