From the Hugo Award–winning and New York Times bestselling author of the Expanse, James S. A. Corey, comes the start of a monumental new space opera series.

HOW HUMANITY CAME TO THE PLANET CALLED ANJIIN IS LOST IN THE FOG OF HISTORY, BUT THAT HISTORY IS ABOUT TO END.

The Carryx—part empire, part hive—has waged wars of conquest for centuries, destroying or enslaving species across the galaxy in its conflict with an ancient and deathless enemy.

When they descend on the isolated world of Anjiin, the human population is abased, slaughtered, and put in chains. The best and brightest are abducted, taken to the Carryx world-palace to join prisoners from a thousand other species.

Dafyd Alkhor, assistant to a prestigious scientist, is captured along with his team.

Even he doesn’t suspect that his peculiar insight and skills will be the key to seeing past their captors’ terrifying agenda.

Swept up in a conflict beyond his control and vaster than his imagination, Dafyd is poised to become humanity’s champion—and its betrayer.

This is where his story begins.

Very few authors write like Corey, I loved the Expanse and this does not disappoint. So many little throw away gems, the scene in the theatre where the researchers early on is a study in scene design, so elegant in it's simplicity it would take a master to get right. I thoroughly enjoyed this Audio book. I want to get it on my scribe now so I can annotate it and keep notes. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Masterfully written, character driven, political sci-fi.

Nothing else to say really, I'm hooked. If you liked The Expanse give this a listen.

A fantastic new universe to get your teeth into.

It's an awesome set up for the story and overall I enjoyed it but it was pretty slow compared to most of the expanse. Way too much character development and dialogue and not enough action for me. Hopefully the next book with crank it up a bit.

Fairly decent but hope it picks up

The Expanse writers are back with a vastly different series. Bit the politics, darkness and depth remain. I will look forward to book 2.

Complex characters with a deep sense of reality, despite the alien setting.

This is still of a similar quality to their earlier works. They still approach the story and characters in the same way, still use the same author’s ticks (the word “oceanic” ought to be trademarked at this point), and the pace is what I’d expect. The story is interesting enough with many layers of intrigue, some action, and excellent worldbuilding. It’s just not as compelling as the story of the Expanse nor is any single character a memorable as the long list they developed in that book series. Maybe that will change with subsequent novels.
Very good but not great.

Not the same sparkle as The Expanse
