About this listen

A stolen past, a search for the truth, two lives changed forever.

Born out of wedlock in Dublin in 1937, Phyllis grew up in a tough, church-run orphanage. She thought by fulfilling her dream to become a nurse in England, her life might change, but her loveless childhood predisposed a loveless marriage and things began to spiral out of control for her and for her daughter, Sally.

Looking for the answers to why both their lives went so spectacularly wrong led Sally to ask questions about the real identity of her mother: 'who was she? Why was she abandoned...I needed to find answers before it was too late.'

After a mission lasting nearly a decade of searching archives and contacting various organisations, charities and anyone who would listen, Sally finally uncovered the truth.

So moving and such a page turner. Her love for her mother is so evident in this book. She has shown us that by being so persistent and cutting through the red tape in her way, she achieved her objective.
Emotional sad at times but utterly charming 😀

A must read!

Had to wait until I stopped crying to write this. I love genealogy so this was right up my street. Loved Phyllis, what a character. Escentric, loving, warm & caring. What a tribute to your dear mum Sally. I did my family tree as both parents died by the time I was 11yrs. I was so inspired & excited by this this book. Ts amazing you met all of your mums paternal side, so happy they met, even if only once. Thanks for your beautiful story. Beautifully read also.

Excellent read

Interesting story, however I feel it was rather dragged out towards the end.. however we never got to know the significance of aunt B ?? Which was dissapointing & seemed to be such an important part of the initial story. The reader was fantastic!!

Fabulous reader with great accents
