Summary

Wexford had almost made up his mind that he would never again set eyes on Eric Targo. And yet there he was, back in Kingsmarkham, still with that cocky, strutting walk.

Years earlier, when Wexford was a young police officer, a woman called Elsie Carroll had been found strangled in her bedroom. Although many still had their suspicions that her husband was guilty, no one was convicted. Another woman was strangled shortly afterwards, and every instinct told Wexford that the killer was still at large. And that it was Eric Targo; a psychopath who would kill again.

As the Chief Inspector investigates a new case, Ruth Rendell looks back to the beginning of Wexford's career, even to his courtship of the woman who would become his wife. The past is a haunted place, with clues and passions that leave an indelible imprint on the here and now.

I enjoyed listening to this book, not only because it was narrated by Nigel Anthony, who I believe to be the best and authentic narrator of the Wexford series, but because it was also a bit different. It was interesting to hear the background of Wexford's early life and the connection with a later case.

In combining past and present. I enjoyed especially the past learning about Wexfords earlier years and meeting his wife. A bit confusing about the timelines as sometimes it went back and forth about the murders or possible murders, I’d loved to get more date lines to put it together but that’s only a small thing. Just wasn’t sure about the ages of Wexford at the different times but used the ranks to get it together. It was still very convincing to learn about the strange relation and obsession with the probable culprit and it so much fit into the previous books. It was also fascinating to use his DI and friend as medium to revisit the past. As more was exposed as more it seemed to be possible and plausible to follow Wexfords views even if little evidence was presented and as more convinced the two got as less convinced I was. Still hoping for whoever was guilty would be exposed and punished even after the crimes and subjects shifted and the usual doubt and confusion set in. At least Wexford got through the middle in the end and all was exposed to ease the mind and he can sleep now without shadows and stalkers.

This was unusual
