Summary
1943, Hampshire. Pixie Saunders is 19 and employed in the local armaments factory. Not for the first time, her mother has run off with a dodgy-looking bloke, leaving Pixie to pay the rent and fend for herself.
Pixie, along with her best friend, Rita; Em, the factory overseer; and the rest of the girls are making the most of the war while trying to stay alive. The work is dangerous and the hours long, but in the evenings they take off their overalls and go to the pub or, better still, go dancing.
Pixie meets American serviceman Cal and falls in love. But then Cal rejoins his ship. When Pixie falls pregnant, her life changes dramatically. Alone and unable to work, she has to rely on the kindness of friends to help her survive. Happiness seems like a thing of the past. Little does she know that there are plenty of surprises waiting for her - good ones at that. Love may be closer than she thinks.

It was a great listen as the narrator added to the brilliant story of Pixie and her friends as they face the fear of bombs falling on their hometown as well as tragic personal problems on a daily business. Each of them supported each other like only true friends can do,What was one of the most memorable moments of The Munitions Girls?
The book is full of memorable moments but for me is when Pixie puts her own problems to the back burner when Rita faces a life-changing tragedy. When any of the girls needs her Pixie is there, she is a girl we all would love in our lives.Have you listened to any of Anne Dover’s other performances? How does this one compare?
Anne Drover is a narrator I always look out for as I know she will not take away from the storyline with silly accents or putting on voices which certainly do not suit the characters. I have had to return good books because of the narrator voices but with Anne Drover I always know I am in for a great listen.Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
When Pixie's mother finally realises her place is with her daughter but she has to earn her trust and love all over again and this is when Gladys turns into a character who I could not fail to care for, it was clear to see where Pixie gets her big and open heart from. As you get to know Gladys as a character you will finally realise why she has turned out the way she has.Any additional comments?
This is a brilliant read as well as a brilliant listen and for me it is five stars all the way for this wonderful book.fantastic atmospheric listen...
