Critic reviews

A gripping, grisly read . . . Mark Billingham is a terrific crime writer
The sense of mounting dread would be unbearable were it not for Billingham's black humour that somehow highlights rather than undermines his sensitive depiction of the consequences of crime. The Murder Book [is] a brilliant thriller by a writer at the top of his game (Mark Sanderson)
This is Billingham at his most enjoyably melodramatic and you'll be knocked sideways by the barrage of twists
Another tense, taut and meticulously planned story, shimmering with edgy originality and depth. Crime fans know Billingham is a formidable talent
A notable rival for the title of Britain's leading male crime novelist
You'll be knocked sideways by the twists
It's Billingham at his most dramatic

Well worth a listen. I will listen to the back catalogue as soon as practicable.

Very enjoyable

I really enjoyed the story but it confirms my dislike of Tom Thorne. The last book was quite dark and this one is even darker but it was good to hear from Dave Holland. I was wondering he, Stone and Kitson had disappeared to. Although the narration is okay, I sometimes struggled to work out who was talking, especially in conversations between Thorne and Brigstock. Unlike some of Mark Billingham’s novels, I didn’t see the two big twists coming at all, which has to be a sign of a tale well told.

A dark tale.

Wasn’t expecting the return of Tom Thorne, and it definitely lived up to my excitement. Gripping as always.

An unexpected continuation!

Up till now I have read Mark Billingham detective Thorne books and enjoyed them. Really enjoyed the narration . Loved the London accent took me back to my youth and hearing my dad and uncles. An excellent story based in a part of London I grew up in , what could be better. Well worth listening to.

Loved listening instead of reading.
