About this listen

Mercy Otis Warren (1728-1814), America’s first woman playwright and historian, was the fiery wife of a Massachusetts patriot and the mother of five sons who secretly authored influential anti-British plays that helped spark the American Revolution.

During the early Federal period she, penned an influential pamphlet arguing for a Bill of Rights, and in 1805, wrote the only Jeffersonian – democratic interpretation of the Revolution, the History of the Rise, Progress and Termination of the American Revolution.
