Summary

In 2003, television journalist Daryna Goshchynska unearths a worn photograph of Olena Dovgan, a member of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army killed in 1947 by Stalin’s secret police. Intrigued by Olena’s story, Daryna sets out to make a documentary of the woman’s extraordinary life and death - and unwittingly opens a door to the past that will change the course of the future.

Spanning 60 tumultuous years of contemporary Ukrainian history, this multigenerational saga weaves a dramatic and intricate web of love, sex, friendship, and death. At its center are three disparate women linked by the abandoned secrets of the past - secrets that refuse to stay hidden.

The use of language and the voice acting both make this book one of my all time favourites. It provides a tantalizing glimpse into Soviet Ukraine and identity in the modern country. I highly recommend it.

A new favourite

The description doesn't do justice yo this book. It ismuch better. There is history, philosophy, current situation in post-communist countries, and more.

Much better than expected

I picked this title because I wanted to learn more about Ukraine after the Russian invasion, and I was totally thrilled, moved, and, at times, breathless. The first hour or so was a bit demanding for me, but after that it is truly rewarding, aided by an excellent reading performance which helps define the characters and sustain the richly nuanced moods.

A great Ukrainian novel, also for 2022

The story itself is like a ball jumping between decades, connecting people and historic events until they all merge. Like I read somewhere, it is Tolstoyan in the way it describes both history and its characters' musings, but the most amazing thing is the reader. Her voice spans across the sexes, the different ages, emotions and chooses light or darkness so smoothly that you almost feel you see the characters in front of you. An astonishing feast and an absolute delight!!!
