Summary

It seemed like the perfect house on the perfect street. Until they met the neighbours....

Happily married couple Katie and Sean have plenty to look forward to as they move into their new home and plan for the future. But then they meet two of their new neighbours and everything on their quiet street suddenly doesn't seem as desirable as it did before.

Having been warned about the other neighbours, and their adulterous and criminal ways, Katie and Sean realise that they are going to have to be on their guard if they want to make their time here a happy one.

But the other neighbours seem so nice and that's why they choose to ignore the warning and get friendly with the rest of the people on the street. And that is why their marriage will never be the same again....

Four houses. Six neighbours. And one shocking twist.

Not one of Daniel Hurts best .I guessed the culprit nearly at the beginning and had no edge of my seat feeling as I usually do with his work

I really can't quite make my mind up on the whole performance, to be honest.
I almost gave up after the first few chapters but valiantly saw it through to what turned out to be a ridiculous ending, not helped by the fact that I realised what the ending was going to be.
Was it the narrators, who seemed to be stilted and lacking in emotion, or the story itself?
I kind of got the feeling that this could have been the author's first attempt at writing (although I have since seen many other titles by this author) because, in parts, the story came across as "amateurish" and "wishy-washy" yet on the other hand, it contained detail in-depth enough for me to know the exact layout of the cul-de-sac in question.
The characters, Katie and Sean were portrayed as infantile like a couple of insecure daft, petulant teenagers, rather than a couple who had already got a few years of marriage under their belts whilst Chris and Abbie seemed like the Posh n Becks of the 2020's!
I really don't know how else to honestly critique it.
I won't request a credit refund because I DID see it through to the end so that seems unfair.
I'll just put it down to experience, and maybe remove Daniel Hurst from my wish list, put there before I knew better.
Or am I being unfair ?

Undecided on this one.....

The male narrator sounded bored (understandably)and had an irritating inconsistent cadence to his voice, additionally you could hear every time he took an intake of breath.

The author over explained everything, I was so annoyed I actually timed how Iong it took for the narrator to read why the protagonist wouldn’t open the door - FOUR MINUTES! This is despite having listened to the story and already knowing why she wouldn’t open the door.

The author seems to treat the reader like a bit of an idiot, over explaining every little point, repeatedly spoon feeding every tiny detail.
One example, paraphrased…

“… I can hear something being put through my letter box
I can see that something has been posted through my letter box
I can see that it is a card that has been posted through my letter box. What is it?”

Infuriating, I had to save myself and did not finish.

Awful

The narrators are AWFUL! A dreary fake Northern accent that does not sound right for the character’s age. And the make narrator sounds like he can’t be bothered to speak and has literally no intonation. That aside, the plot is boring and all, ‘we can’t hang out with the neighbours because we might be tempted to gave affairs’. Then they hang out with said neighbours.

A very weak plot alongside about some other neighbours not being very friendly is incredibly dull. And the character of Katie who seems to knock out a painting every day because she’s an ARTIST. This made me roll my eyes every time it’s mentioned. Apparently she knows all about art and works from her bedroom. BORING!

I didn’t care about the ending and nearly gave up several times. I enjoyed the last book by this author but this one is terrible and I can’t actually believe this was published. Fair play to anyone who writes a book, but this was so weak and repetitive.

Sorry but I hated this book
