A powerful, heart-breaking story about tempting fate and living with the consequences

Arthur and Jake are brothers yet worlds apart.

Arthur is older, shy, dutiful and set to inherit his father's farm. Jake is younger, handsome and reckless, a dangerous man to know.

When Laura arrives in their rural community, the fragile balance of the brothers' rivalry is pushed to the edge of catastrophe...

'An enthralling read, both straightforward and wonderfully intricate' Guardian

'Evokes beautifully the big joys and sorrows of most people, no matter how small their town' The Times

I was absolutely absorbed by the story and the telling of it. Excellently read this is a story with such emotional detail, descriptions of the lives of different generations, of tragic events and joy. I found myself sad when I realised there were only three hours left.

captivating story

A town called Solace was always going to be a hard act to follow but this is just as good. Slow start but builds throughout - very addictive. Sad to have finished it.

I didn’t want to give the story less stars as I’ve enjoyed other Mary Lawson titles, but I couldn’t get past chapter 2 with this one and that was solely down to the narration. I found the guy’s voice so monotone and boring, I actually wondered if it was computer generated at one point! Feel very hard done by losing a credit on this one and i bate giving up in stories, but life is short and i felt like i was wasting my time here. On to the next!

The WORST narrator ever!
