About this listen

Childhood sweethearts William and Mary have been married for sixty years. William is a celebrated surgeon, Mary a devoted wife. Both have a strong sense of right and wrong.

This is what their son, Joe O'Loughlin, has always believed. But when Joe is summoned to the hospital with news that his father has been brutally attacked, his world is turned upside down. Who is the strange woman crying at William's bedside, covered in his blood - a friend, a mistress, a fantasist or a killer?

Against the advice of the police, Joe launches his own investigation. As he learns more, he discovers sides to his father he never knew - and is forcibly reminded that the truth comes at a price.

A mesmerising psychological thriller from one of the greatest crime writers of today, Michael Robotham, the internationally bestselling author of THE SECRETS SHE KEEPS.

Was so excited when I saw a new Joe O’Loughlin novel was out as I have all of the previous ones and really enjoyed them!
This one was also enjoyable but I didn’t feel it was quite up to the previous standard. Although I understand that life has been difficult for Joe recently this book was melancholic all the way through and became a little depressing!
I won’t give up on Joe but please cheer him up and give him a good non personal case to get his teeth into!!!

Good but not amazing!

I bought the Audible version and finished it in less than 2 days. Absolutely gripped and as usual, Robotham pulls one surprise after another out of the bag.

I’ve read most of the Joe O’Loughlin series, so I was aware of his back story and friendship with Ruiz. This works very well as a stand-alone, but it helps to know about past tragedies. With that in mind, it’s difficult to believe that one individual or family could suffer so many problems and loss. And this book takes that one step further by introducing a second wife for Joe’s dad. That would be difficult enough for any family, but then throw in financial fraud, bigamy, adultery, mental health, bereavement, murder and medical negligence and you get an idea of the complexity of the story.

I love the way Joe gives insight into thought process which helps understand motivation and human behaviour. Ruiz is the congenial and understated straight guy. Now retired but active. Joes daughters are making progress and their back stories are integral to this plot. It’s a be,ting thriller, couldn’t second guess where it was going next and it’s packed full of surprising twists. Right to the end.

Twisty, turny thriller. First rate

Well paced storyline with a twist in the tale. Enjoy the narrator's style. Hope there will be more in this series.

Another Robotham masterpiece

Another great Michael Robotham book. I didn't want it to end. Hopefully we won't have to wait too long for the next one.
Sean Barrett is a great narrator.

Excellent

Sean Barrett performs this book with his usual excellence and breathes such life into each character that you can't help but feel them in your house. Michael Robotham writes these characters with a clear view of whom they are and with a care that is appreciated. The story is engaging and keeps you guessing and deducting along with Joe. Joe's interactions with his children and Ruiz are by far the heart of these books and raise the thriller above the usual episodic crime novels on the shelves. Truly hope the series will continue

One of my favorites in the series
