About this listen

AN EVOCATIVE VICTORIAN DETECTIVE MYSTERY FULL OF CLEVER TWISTS

Pershore, 1890.

Talbots' Lodging House is renowned for its revolting fare. But no one ever died from dining there—until now.

Everyone who tasted the chef's soup is left with a nasty case of food poisoning.

BUT THE MAN WHO REFUSED IT IS FOUND DEAD.

Detective Inspector Samuel Ravenscroft and Constable Tom Crabb are called in to investigate.

Rumours abound that the dead man has been poisoned—a theory that fits with the circumstantial evidence.

Another guest dies in equally mysterious circumstances. Could arsenic be the common lethal ingredient?

Ravenscroft and Crabb begin to unearth long-buried secrets. But something's troubling Ravenscroft.

CAN THEY SOLVE THE CASE BEFORE THE PAST DESTROYS THE PRESENT?

Perfect for fans of M.R.C. Kasasian, E.S. Thomson, Oscar DeNuriel or Karen Charlton

Not the best in the series or the most credible. Ravenscroft seems to go from being 100% convinced about the identity of the killer to being 100% wrong to being 100% convinced that someone else is the the killer, then 100% wrong, then someone else… it all gets a little tiresome. Also, the book and the narration need a good editor. During Ravencroft’s conversation with a former colleague he seems to be talking to himself!

Disappointing

I like the books in this series they are set in the late 19th century and the stories pace is more genteel and less violent than modern times books, which makes a nice change. Each book lets us see into the Victorian world and into the lives of DI Ravenscroft and his trusty assistant Constable Crabtree. This book is slightly slower going and less exciting than previous books. However, as a Worcestershire local I enjoy listening out for locations that pop up in the storyline that I recognise like the Angel hotel in Pershore and the Abbey. I would definitely recommend this book and series to readers who enjoy detective whodunnits set at a gentler time and place

Poisonous goings on in Pershore

It’s almost like Ravenscroft is a Jekyll n Hyde character. One book he’s clever and insightful but in others such as this book he blunders around, just banging his head against walls and doors hoping something will give! This book was particularly frustrating when it comes to protagonist- he blunders around, flinging wild accusations at potential suspects and shouting at them till they threaten legal action or break down and plead innocence. Proof and evidence be damned. It’s a wonder how he ever solves this case

Not the best Ravencroft Mystery

From start to finish this is really poor. Evidence farcical. Don't bother wasting your time!
