About this listen

Story one: The Conquest of Bread by Peter Kropotkin

The deficiencies of the economic systems of capitalism and feudalism are proposed to be how the whole of society is kept in poverty and scarcity and, therefore, under the control of the wealthy few. Written in the late 1800s, this prophetic book reveals the truths of the many abuses against human rights caused by the centralization of industry.

Story two: Mutual Aid: A Factor of Evolution by Peter Kropotkin

Mutual aid, otherwise known as mutually beneficial cooperation, is explored as having an essential role in both the animal kingdom and human society in the survival of everyone. Supporting the theory and foundation for anarchist communism, Peter presents an altruistic view of society, comparing it to the natural laws of biology and evolution.

Story three: Fields, Factories and Workshops by Peter Kropotkin

Focused on the decentralization of industry, Fields, Factories and Workshops connects anarchism with science based on behavioral trends and tendencies of people. He delivers an economical approach to the formation of a stateless society in which all citizens participate in meeting the needs of the community.

Story four: An Appeal to the Young by Peter Kropotkin

Kropotkin’s most famous pamphlet An Appeal to the Young addresses young professionals entering the workforce, encouraging them to join the cause to incite radical societal change.

Story five: The Life of Kropotkin by CSA Publishing

This is an original biography about the prolific thought leader in communist anarchism. Kropotkin tirelessly approached a cause which he believed would benefit humanity and continued to inspire his fellow countrymen to join the movement until his death in 1921.

Story One: This audiobook really opened my eyes to how our current economic systems, whether capitalism or feudalism, seem designed to keep the majority poor and under the control of a wealthy few. It's chilling how accurately this book, written so long ago, predicts many of the injustices we still struggle with today.

Story Two: I was completely captivated by this exploration of mutual aid. It challenges the idea that competition is the only way to survive, showing how cooperation is vital for the well-being of both animals and humans. This book provides a powerful framework for imagining a more just and compassionate society.

Story Three: This audiobook offers a compelling vision for a radically different society, one where industry is decentralized and everyone contributes to the community's needs. It blends anarchist ideals with scientific observations of human behavior, creating a thought-provoking blueprint for a more equitable future.

Story Four: This short but powerful pamphlet is a direct call to action, particularly aimed at young people entering the workforce. It urges us to question the status quo and actively participate in building a more just and equitable world. It's a truly inspiring listen.

Story Five: This biography brought to life the remarkable life and work of a true visionary. Kropotkin's dedication to the cause of anarchist communism is truly inspiring, and this audiobook effectively conveys his passion and unwavering belief in a better future for humanity.

I picked up this collection out of curiosity and ended up completely hooked. Kropotkin’s Fields, Factories and Workshops was surprisingly relevant—he talks about local production and sustainable living in ways that feel super modern. And An Appeal to the Young? That one got me in the gut. You can feel his passion. These books aren’t just political theory—they’re a call to action.

The Peter Kropotkin Anthology offers a powerful and insightful collection of works that remain relevant today. Kropotkin's analysis of economic systems and his advocacy for mutual aid provide a compelling alternative vision for society. "The Conquest of Bread" exposes the roots of inequality, while "Mutual Aid" offers a contrasting perspective on cooperation in nature and human society. "Fields, Factories and Workshops" presents a practical approach to decentralization.

It's paced in a way that lets you think about what's being said, but some of the concepts might need a second listen to really get them. Definitely a must-hear for those who are into political philosophy and caring about fairness in the world!

I wasn’t sure what to expect going into this, but I’m really glad I gave it a shot. Kropotkin’s ideas are powerful and still feel super relevant today. The annotation helps a lot—it breaks things down without dumbing them down, which made the whole thing easier to follow. The narration is clear and steady, not too dry, which is a big plus for something this dense.

Brilliant and surprisingly accessible
