Summary

Adrik Marinov was raised to be a monster. The heir to a ruthless Russian dynasty, he spent his life groomed in the shadows of violence and blood. He finally did the impossible: he walked away. But freedom is a fragile thing when your father is Viktor Marinov, and Adrik knows that as long as he’s breathing, he’s never truly out.

He escaped the mafia, but he couldn’t escape the target on his back.

Hans Schroeger is everything Adrik isn’t calm, scholarly, and safe. A German professor with a novelist’s soul and a laid-back California charm, Hans has built a life out of quiet oceanside mornings in Germany and old books. He’s survived heartbreak by choosing solitude, convincing himself that being alone is the same thing as being content.

When New Yorker, Adrik crashes into Hans’s peaceful world in Germany, the collision is instant and undeniable. Hans offers a warmth Adrik never thought he deserved; Adrik offers a dangerous intensity that wakes Hans up.

Audiobook - very good narration.
Story - Adrik flees his mob family and goes into hiding. While living in a remote village, he meets Hans and the two find a strong attraction to each other. Adrik keeps a lot of secrets to try to protect both of them, which is not conducive to a healthy relationship. The ending was quite unexpected. The story mainly focused on Adrik, and while that worked well, I would have enjoyed a little more detail for Hans.

good

Adrik is on the run from his mobster father, who wants him dead. He ends up in Germany where he mets an English professor, Hans. Very quickly the two begin a relationship.

The story was fine but there was a bunch of jealously from Hans, that quickly became annoying! They had been on one date, and then he ghosts Adrik because a girl is sitting close to Adrik🤷🏼‍♀️ Can you say drama queen much!! This happens multiple times where Hans completely overreact and acts clingy, demanding and possessive eventhough they have just met. He even invites Adrik to meet his parents after they have only seen each other a few times and demands to know about Adriks past eventhough Adrik says he can't. I wished the author had added some time with them just dating before all the drama and jealously. It was red flag after red flag and completely unacceptable behaviour from Hans towards a person he had just met a few days ago 🚩🚩 Adrik deserved better, honestly.

The narration was ok, but the accents were awful😬 It sounded so bad and unfortunately there were a lot of dialogue ergo a lot of cringy accent use. It lowered the storytelling since it was hard abstract from it.

Unfortunately not a great story for me.

Not for me, unfortunately
