I was forced into a life I didn't choose. He's falling for the thing he hates the most.

When my husband of twenty-five years leaves me to expedite his political agenda, and his new girlfriend ensures I have no place within the shadow council, I am starting over with a new business and no financial security.

With my occult shop starting to turn a profit and new friendships blooming, I don’t plan to let anybody stand in the way of my future, but when a member of the Council falls ill, they turn to the witch they so callously cast aside. Me.

If I help my ex, I am solidifying his seat of power, but if I don't, innocent people will die and the ancient power unleashed will destroy more than our mystical town.

This very short story had a really interesting premise and felt like a good start to a fun series.

The characters were intriguing but I would have liked them to have more depth. It will be interesting to see if this is developed more as the series goes on.

It did seem to end on a rather odd cliffhanger that felt more like the end of a chapter, than the end of a book. It would have made more sense to have this as the first part of a longer book than separate them.

Overall, it was a decent start to the series and I would recommend it but it would have made more sense to combine several books into one.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Short but interesting

Prime of my Magical Life is the first book in the Shrouded Nation series. It is a paranormal romance featuring a witch named Eve. Eve is recently divorced from her cheating, controlling, narcissistic, useless ex, Caton. While relieved to finally be separated from him, she also feels embarrassed to have allowed him to mistreat her for so long. Eve is finding herself again after 20+ years of marriage but feels like an outcast without any friends. She has just opened The Blue Moon, a metaphysical shop serving both paranormals and mundanes. She is also stepping into her power, preparing tinctures and potions to help others, getting stronger and learning to believe in herself. It is a beautiful thing.

Eve wants to break down the barriers that keep paranormals separate. She wants to unite them. She ends up reconnecting with Kat, a shifter school friend, and befriending Nishi, a mundane who was blessed by a goddess. These two lead Eve to understand that there is something amiss in Ravenolde and since the esteemed Shadow Council doesn't seem inclined to even acknowledge the situation, she is determined to step up.

This book is a fantasy-lovers dream. In addition to witches and shifters, there are demons and vampires and all manner of paranormal beasts. There is action and adventure and an illicit lust-interest. Our heroine repeatedly finds herself in life-threatening situations but never gives up.

I had a lot of fun reading this book, and was very disappointed when I reached the cliffhanger ending. I'm keen to delve into the second book to continue the adventure and see what happens next.

Note, about 3 years after reading the book, I listened to this audiobook narrated by Naomi Rose-Mock. I was fun to revisit the story in a different way. Listening to an audiobook is often like having someone read you a bedtime story. I enjoyed Rose-Mock's tone. It was great to get a refresher on the first book in this series as I'm hoping to be able to listen to future audiobook releases.
