Summary

Engaging and fast-paced, this gripping coming-of-age novel of chess, feminism, and addiction speeds to a conclusion as elegant and satisfying as a mate in four.

Eight-year-old orphan Beth Harmon is quiet, sullen, and by all appearances unremarkable. That is, until she plays her first game of chess. Her senses grow sharper, her thinking clearer, and for the first time in her life she feels herself fully in control.

By the age of 16, she's competing for the US Open championship. But as Beth hones her skills on the professional circuit, the stakes get higher, her isolation grows more frightening, and the thought of escape becomes all the more tempting.

Really excellent; my only criticism is that the narrator makes all the male characters sound a bit stoned.

Excellent Book

Some reviewers have complained about the narration of the audio book. I had no problem with it, but I did listen at 1.3x normal speed, which may have helped.

The story is great. If you have seen the excellent Netflix series, that is a very accurate adaptation.

An excellent story, well told.

I came here after watching the show on Netflix and was not disappointed. Great book which was well read by Amy Landon. However she seemed to have one voice for Beth and the same voice for every other character.

Narrator lets it down somewhat

I know that some people have commented on poor narration but I listened to this alongside watching it on Netflix. I thought that the narrator nailed the strangeness of the main character. Loved it
