About this listen

From the bestselling author of On Tyranny comes a revealing history of the four modern national ideas that arose from the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth

Modern nationalism in northeastern Europe has often led to violence and then reconciliation between nations with bloody pasts. In this fascinating book, Timothy Snyder traces the emergence of Polish, Ukrainian, Lithuanian, and Belarusian nationhood over four centuries, discusses various atrocities (including the first account of the massive Ukrainian-Polish ethnic cleansings of the 1940s), and examines Poland's recent successful negotiations with its newly independent Eastern neighbors, as it has channeled national interest toward peace.

Níor léir i gcónaí cén fáth ar thug an scríbhneoir náisiún ar an ngrúpa seo nó siúd ag pointí áirithe, ná cén ról a d'imir dreamanna cosmhuintire ar an scéal roimh ré náisiúnachas na nua-aoise dar leis, má d'imir, ach is maith ann an t-iarracht súil neamh-fhéinchúiseach a chaitheamh air an gceist. Is gnéithe suimiúla iad an plé a dhéantar ar cheisteanna staire á chur chun leataobh chun an pholaitíocht shíochánta a bhrú chun cinn, agus na himpleachtaí a d'fhéadfadh a bheith leis na stáit seo a bheith scartha ag teorainn an AE anois

This is a must listen or must read book for Western Europeans or anyone who wants to learn about what transpired between the people of today’s Poland, Lithuania, Belarus, Russia and Ukraine over the centuries and eventually after bloody conflict led to the nation states we know today. It helps to better understand why certain sensitivities amongst these nations are as they are and to appreciate the importance of the success of some of these nations to overcome their differences and look to a joint future in peace inside European institutions. The book was an eyeopener for me as someone who was born in a Western European country with a nationality from another country that once was the heartland of the Habsburg Empire, Austria, with a surname that clearly has its origins centuries ago from somewhere in those Eastern European regions. I will surely going to re-listen the book, as it is a very complex history but a very important one to understand.
