The Red Dragon of Oxford is the first book by this author that I have read and the author won me over as I liked both the plot and the characters.
Mark is in Oxford for the first day when he sees a dragon. And so begins a wonderful book with a mix of university life and the paranormal, peppered with witty banter.
I really loved the descriptions of Oxford, you could really picture the university campus.
Mark soon meets the hot but grumpy librarian Rufus. As a reader, I could feel the chemistry between the two from their first meeting. Mark has a struggle or two as a new grad student, but it was nice to watch him slowly overcome his insecurities.
Despite being a dragon, Rufus loves books more than anything gold, which earns him the disdain of his clan. The dragon code of Rufus' family was well described. I figured Rufus correctly from the beginning and I found him to be a very likable character.
I liked how the story developed and there was plenty of action with the dragons at the end.

As I said, the chemistry between Rufus and Mark was there from the start, there were hot scenes and it was great to see Rufus being very protective of Mark.
The story was generally well told and entertaining. I can't wait to see what happens next!
The narrator, Rufus Love, was also new to me and had a pleasant voice. He gave the characters appropriate voices and managed the changes of perspective quite well.

I think this is the first book by this author I've read. Really enjoyed both the characters and the storyline in the book.

Mark finds a dragon on his first day in Oxford, then meets the slightly grumpy librarian, not knowing they are one and the same.

After a slightly rocky start, Rufus lets Mark into his world. Their connection and chemistry was felt throughout. I adored the scenes where Rufus is taking care of Mark.

The descriptions of Oxford were well done without overwhelming the plot, which there were plenty of. I didn't see some aspects of it coming and I loved that.

The narration was good on the whole, with a few spots where it fell a little flat to me. That was the only criticism I would have with it. Most of the time, I was able to just enjoy the story. The narrator had a pleasant voice and had to work with rapid changes of POV, which were handled well.

I really want Rufus' brother to have a story!

I enjoyed reading the story last year (and the series as a whole). Rufus and Mark made a great pair - neither were smooth, urbane MCs; just 2 guys (okay, a dragon and guy), who love academia, books (and after awkwardly dancing around), fall in love.

Rufus Love -I was tickled by the fact that he's the MCs namesake - was great. I enjoyed his voices for each of the characters, the slight inflections for the different emotions. As with all new-to-me narrators, it took me a little while to get use to his cadence, but that's a minor quirk on my part. I hope he's able to perform the rest of the series, he's really good!
Definitely recommend :)

As an incurable Anglophile and huge fan of stories set in academia, how could I not grab this romance set in Oxford, with main characters of a doctoral candidate and a librarian with a shape-shifter dragon involved. I was totally caught up in the setting and enjoyed the fact that both Mark and Rufus had logical insecurities about their place in the world, especially class-conscious Oxford and a similarly class-conscious in other ways dragon society. I enjoyed Rufus Love's narration. I'm excited this is labeled book #1 and hope we get more in this world soon.

I enjoyed the fun and entertaining story of student Marc and red dragon/librarian Rufus (no relation to the narrator. LOL). Both MCs have issues with inadequacy, in Marc's case it's 'imposter' syndrome, feeling not good enough for his place at Oxford, while for Rufus, it is years of isolation and social anxiety, resulting from his family's disregard because he's a red dragon, and because his treasure is books and knowledge, instead of monetary wealth. The romance was engaging and I enjoyed seeing the MCs help each other overcome their perceived deficiencies. My issue is with the dragons/mystery parts of the story. There are a couple different plot threads dealing with other dragon types and banking fraud/theft from Rufus's family, neither of which received adequate resolution to my mind. In fact, the thefts are only mentioned a couple times, and there is no resolution. I see this is listed as Book I in the series, so hopefully these issues with receive further exploration in future books.

The narrator was new to me, but I thought he did a good job differentiating voices for each character, and I found his voice easy to understand and pleasant to listen to.
