About this listen

When The Revenant returns, Death is never far behind.

After ex-drug dealer Roy Lynch is found hanged in the garage of his country mansion, what at first appears to be a routine suicide soon becomes more insidious—vengeful proof that the wages of sin aren't so great, after all. As the investigation gathers pace, one question vexes the team—who is the young woman who hissed, "I hope you burn in hell" to Lynch's wife as she lay on her death bed?

It's exactly what DI Max Angel doesn't need. Recently back from six weeks off, he's struggling to come to terms with his own past, a living nightmare that also sentenced his friend and long-term DS to indefinite sick leave. The replacement, DS Catalina Kincade, has got more than enough baggage of her own, demoted from inspector down to sergeant for reasons Angel doesn't believe.

As the body count rises, Angel and Kincade are forced to look to the past, cutting through 30 years of deceit and betrayal and lies to reveal the family secrets buried below. The tragedy they unearth makes it horrifically clear that in a world filled with hatred and pain, nothing comes close to what families do to one another.

The Revenant is the first book in the new Angel & Kincade series of crime thrillers from USA Today best-selling author, James Harper, a gripping, twisty adventure that will have you on the edge of your seat until the very end.

Some great one liners in this made me smile a lot. Twists, turns in this who dunnit of various murders around town. Initial Introduction to the 2 main characters who hit it off and are nice characters to follow for the series. Yeah get on James Harper he has loads more available. Been reading him for years.

The narrator is boss as well. Worth your credit.

A good range of characters that were easy to follow as the story unfolded. A complex scenario between the principle characters played along side the mystery unfurling with numerous twists and turns. The characters were nicely fleshed out and easy to relate to with some cute quirks along the way. Very enjoyable read, I look forward to more.

The final unraveling was a surprise

This is a new gritty series from James Harper, featuring detectives Max Angel & Catalina Kincade. They both have a lot of baggage, which hasn't all been explained yet. They are presented with a case which grows & grows. More characters & related family members. Events of thirty years ago are the trigger for the current killing spree. A web of lies & mistrust. Complex. Intertwined relationships. This story really was brought to life with Tim’s narration. I enjoyed the audiobook. Highly recommend.

Until I moved to Cornwall in 2010 I spent most of my adult life in Hampshire, mainly Eastleigh/Chandlers Ford, and worked for a time in Southampton. So I was thrilled to be able to picture in my mind the places mentioned in the book. I love crime stories with a touch of humour and The Revenant slots easily into this genre. The two main characters are really forced on each other but it's not too long before they 'click' and the light banter between them helps calm the waters of a very difficult case. I love the fact that we don't learn all about their backstory in one great info dump and am sure that we are going to learn much more about them in future books in the series.
I do love the fact that the lead detective is an ex-priest called Angel. How fitting! I like to think that I can work out the bad guys before the climax of the books I love, but this one had me vexed right up to the reveal. Tim Bruce narrates this really well. I am a firm believer that a bad narration ruins a good book and I have deleted books from my account because of that in the past. Tim makes a really good book a joy to listen to. The plot rolls along at a good pace and passed my 'ten minute rule' with flying colours...if it doesn't grab me within the first ten minutes I don't finish reading/listening. Well done, James. This is a winner.

Two detectives are brought together, both with back stories that are drip fed. The humour and one liners between them builds up a good relationship. I thoroughly enjoyed the development of their working relationship. A gripping story that kept you on the edge with various twists. I look forward to reading or listening to more of this infectious pair of detectives
