A thrilling and unprecedented account of the radicalism and political extremism that gripped the 1970s – a seismic decade that transformed the modern world.

In the 1970s, a network of extremists terrorised the West with intricately planned plane hijackings and hostage-takings. Among them were the glamorous Leila Khaled, hard-drinking Carlos the Jackal, and radical leftists of the Baader-Meinhof Gang. United by their hatred of Israel, capitalism and ‘Western imperialism’, they unleashed a series of audacious attacks that brought governments to their knees and glued the world to their tv screens.

Drawing on decades of research, recently declassified government files, secret documents, and first-hand interviews with hijackers, spies, witnesses and victims, Jason Burke takes us inside these often-deadly operations. Through the perpetrators’ eyes – and of the unrelenting agents who hunted them down – he uncovers a dark, complex world of loyalty, betrayal and commitment to change at any cost.

Pitching us into these tumultuous times, The Revolutionists reveals how a campaign led by secular leftist revolutionaries gave way to a far more lethal movement of conservative religious fanaticism that would dominate the decades to come. It is impossible to understand the world today without reading this book.

This is absolutely stunning and well written piece of non- fiction. The performance of the narrator, I found to be very good. Mr Burke, handles his subjects very seriously and with exuberant detail and precision. The overall tone is outstanding, one can not help but be drawn in, which is absolutely the Author’s intention. I found all fascinating. You see how it is all connected one way or the other, the various Revolutionist / Guerrilla / Terrorist groups that had been fighting for their causes, most of which paid for their beliefs in blood. The various real life characters that held the World to ransom, forever to be known. The whole of the book is very cinematic, as is with real life stories more often than not, seem to be even more thrilling than fiction. I can’t help thinking that this outstanding book would make an excellent Film or Docudrama. Mr Burke has written this fantastic book with a very keen eye. I really did find it hard to stop listening to it. Highly Recommended

An Overall Excellent Book

Really liked the narrator despite my earlier misgivings, and enjoyed the detail and the scope. But where are the Irish? Seem to recall they wreaked havoc in the 1970s, as did the Red Brigade in Italy. It appears our man from The Guardian has a selective memory

Gripping, but selective

Very thoroughly researched with superb narration. The author was also very objective and knowledgeable about the wider historical picture.
