About this listen

From the bestselling author of Mad Love and American Girl comes a propulsive new thriller with a spectacular twist and an acclaimed cast.

They were best friends forever. Until the night one of them disappeared.

In 2010, Brooke Lowry, Carrie Hollis, and Eve Shay were inseparable. But on the Fourth of July, Eve vanished—her case never solved. Brooke moved away, but Carrie couldn’t let go, her obsession driving her to become the Chief of Police.

Now, fifteen years later, just as Carrie is about to close Eve’s case for good, an anonymous call provides a chilling new lead. And–within days–a man’s body is hauled in by a fishing boat. His murder is linked to a hotel a few miles away–where the guest in the room next door was none other than Brooke Lowry.

Brooke was there that night—with her lover. They heard something through the wall. Something violent. But they couldn’t say a word without revealing their affair.

As Carrie digs deeper into both cases, Brooke scrambles to cover her tracks, and Eve’s own voice begins to rise from the past. Together, their stories unravel a web of lies, betrayals, and long-buried secrets that lead to the shocking truth of what happened to Eve Shay.

This story contains mature themes. Listener discretion is advised.

Check-in to your next listening obsession
Wendy Walker has done it again! She’s given us not one, not two, but three fantastic unreliable narrators—my favorite kind—in this twisty thriller that grabbed me from the first chapter and never let go. Set in a small US coastal town, The Room Next Door starts with a bang. A couple having an affair in a hotel overhear a possible crime occur in the room next door. The investigation into what happens next cleverly ties into the unsolved disappearance of a young woman years before. Julia Whelan, Elizabeth Evans, and Bebe Wood lead a full cast of performers, giving voice to three best friends who once shared everything, until one of them went missing. Now, 15 years later, shocking new evidence surfaces that calls everything into question. Clear your calendar, because I guarantee you'll devour this in one sitting just like I did. —Margaret H., Audible Editor

Good book. Seemed to jump to the conclusion a liitle quickly. However, very much enjoyed. Thank you, great author.

Enjoyed the twists and turns

Really good story and very believable I wish someone would make this into a tv series!

Brilliant

Parts of the story were very repetitive. I got three quarters of the way through and got too exasperated.

Rather protracted story line.

This is the first time I can recall listening to an entire book when I didn't enjoy it particularly and nearly from the beginning. It's probably advantageous that I was in bed each time I listen to some.

It dragged out endlessly and could have been done with 3 hours less. The constant back and forward and overly bludgeoned detail of every single emotion or personal activity was completely unnecessary and so bloated.

The ending was completely ridiculous because the culprit had nothing to do with the story almost all the way throughout and it was as if that person had been made to be the culprit just to give us a twist, and yet had no historic link to what had gone on.

The narration was okay, although with the lady voicing the character of Brooke had very annoying standard American vocal fry.

I would have to be persuaded very strongly to listen to another one by this author.

Odd and disappointing

The narrators were ok. With a large cast I wouldn’t notice many flaws. And it was well produced. But I’m afraid the story left me … well, yeah, it just left me really. Towards the end I just couldn’t concentrate on it. So when it finished, I realised I had no clue as to who was to blame and why. And I think if I replay the last few chapters I’ll probably find my mind wandering again. So, no, I can’t be bothered to listen to the ending again. And I won’t be listening to her next book, which will be released in January, about ice skaters at the Olympics. Sorry Wendy Walker. I wish you well but your books are clearly not for me.

Glad it was free
