Summary

The hockey player, the figure skater, and the roommate situation…

Gus

No one knows how to make a party last quite like me. For real. Technically, I should have graduated three years ago, but I love Smithton, I love hockey, and the team needs a good captain who keeps things fun. That’s me.

This is it, though. I can’t delay the inevitable, so yeah…this is officially my last year of college and I’m going out big!

Unfortunately, my new roommate is curbing my vibe. In fact, I don’t think Rafe likes me much—total mystery. I’m a nice guy. Ask anyone.

Rafe’s the one with stick-in-the-mud-itis. He also has a great smile, pretty eyes, a cute dimple, and…

Oh, man. I think I have a situation.

Rafe

This cannot be happening. I’m a competitive figure skater with goals and big plans. How did I get saddled with a party boy hockey hero for a roommate?

Oh, yeah, I mistakenly assumed the captain of the hockey team would be a serious person. Wrong. Gus and I have nothing in common and I have no idea how I’m going to survive a year of this.

But in a twist, we’re good together in a crisis. So good, that I’m beginning to wonder if we could be something more than a couple of athletes playing the roommate game.

The Roommate Game is an MM bisexual-awakening, light-angst, college hockey romance featuring a fun-loving captain, a serious figure skater, and a chance at forever.

I really enjoyed this sweet story about a serious, quiet figure skater and his loud, party boy hockey captain roommate. Rafe and Gus are like oil and water. Gus is the life of the party and just wants to have fun, while Rafe is working toward long-term goals, including Olympic dreams. Yet, once they look past the surface and get to know each other, they really click. This is a mostly light-hearted story, although it does also include some serious topics like alcohol and drug abuse, family expectations, and being honest versus putting on a pubic facade. I liked both MCs, but especially Gus's quiet kindness. He is financially much better off than Rafe, but he doesn't lord it over him, and quietly helps him toward his goal without even telling him. Both men grow over the story and realize they can have their dreams without sacrificing self or personal integrity.

The narration by Kirt Graves is spot-on, and he channels both the uptight Rafe and happy-go-lucky Gus perfectly.

I received an audio ARC and am voluntarily leaving this honest review.

Another fantastic addition to the series by Lane Hayes. Gus and Rafe are interesting characters to follow. Kirt Graves did a superb job with the narration.

Seeing Gus realise that he had some serious issues he needed to overcome was what made me love his character. His insecurities and worries were so relatable and the struggles he faced on his journey to graduation and becoming a 'real adult' made it easy to root for him to succeed.

Rafe and Gus together were actually a really good fit - I totally cried when Rafe was packing up his stuff after graduation!!! I was so happy when they finally figured out what they were to each other because the way their relationship built felt so natural and easy for them  attract though and this was a really entertaining read.
Such a wonderful audiobook narrated by Kirt Graves who has a wonderful voice.

I wasn't sure about this one going in. Gus has never been a character that interested me in the previous books, but I guess I was wrong. He's a complex character with issues, although for a book that deals with substance abuse, it's remarkably light on angst.
This book overlaps some with Ty's story, and I'll be interested to go back and look for any clues in Gus' behaviour.

Kirt Graves narration adds another layer to the story. You can really feel Gus struggling with his sobriety. I think i loved it more in second read because I knew what was behind Gus' actions, especially early in the book.

A feel-good low angst sports romance.

Gus is a party boy who annoys his roommate Rafe to no end.
What no one knows is that Gus is hiding behind a facade and it's about to come tumbling down.
He's got an addiction problem that he's suffered with for a long time.
Rafe, on the other hand, is struggling with a past injury that's left him terrified of ending his skating career.
As they slowly get to know one another, they find out there's much more to each other than they realize.
Kirt Graves did an amazing job narrating and bringing these characters to life.
