Summary

My dad says bad things happen when I break it....

Daniel is looking forward to his birthday. He wants pie and chips, a big chocolate cake and a comic book starring his favourite superhero. And as long as he follows The Rule, nothing bad will happen.

Daniel will be 23 next week. And he has no idea that he's about to kill a stranger. Daniel's parents know that their beloved and vulnerable son will be taken away. They know that Daniel didn't mean to hurt anyone, he just doesn't know his own strength. They dispose of the body. Isn't that what any loving parent would do?

But as forces on both sides of the law begin to close in on them, they realise they have no option but to finish what they started. Even if it means that others will have to die.... Because they'll do anything to protect Daniel. Even murder.

I have loved this author’s books but not this one as much. I did get into the story despite the terrible narration of one of the characters, it was basically matt berry doing a jammed up voice over voice. Def prefer authors other books . Good idea for a story, lots of characters, slight twists and turns, I was rooting for the main characters. Glad I finished but I nearly gave up half way through.

Early didn’t finish

Took me a few chapters to get into but was keen to keep listening once I did get into it! Narration wasn't great in places but not bad enough to stop me enjoying the book or to stop listening!! I could easily identify different characters & feel what they were feeling. Good story, ending tied up loose ends well but partly wish there had been a little more detail to finish. Worth a listen though

I've never understood why people are put off by bad narration. Until now. The characters are lost beneath the bizarre narration. I'm sure there's a good story in there somewhere.

The twists in this book were brilliantly written and the empathy the story triggered in me as a parent is rare. I loved the character Daniel and the deep love and protective energy that the author portrayed of Daniel’s parents.

I enjoyed the writing of the main police characters family and the traumatic experiences that fuelled the well written finale of the story.

A very well written book and a pleasure to read. When I feel myself getting angry with characters or not being able to stop reading; I know it’s a winner.

How well the author understands learning difficulties and autism really comes across in this beautiful but poignant story

So happy to have discovered this author! You just never know what his characters will do next! The story is fascinating as a study of what humans will do when they are cornered.
However the narrator was totally off with his portrayals of Scott and Gemma. They sounded like lord and lady of the manor, rather than a council high rise flat dwelling car mechanic and a part time supermarket worker. His delivery was very stilted and lacking flow to begin with too! Hopefully this will improve with experience.

Great story
