About this listen

Their eyes met across a crowded room. She was just a poor servant girl, and he was the son of a rich industrialist.

Er, no, this is a Christopher Brookmyre novel, although the eyes meeting across a crowded room part is true. Where it differs from the fairy tales is that the room in question was crowded with hostages and armed bank robbers, and his eyes were the only part of him she could see behind the mask....

So really really enjoyable but the narrator really can't do American accents. Love Brookmyre though. One of my faves of his.

Great book, rubbish accents

OK but not the best! American accent is terrible but if you can get past that it's still Very cleverly constructed story. Full on fantasy but a great escapism read

Is there no-one in the United Kingdom capable of reproducing the accents of Scotland who also has a grasp of the accents and idioms of the continental US? If so, you’d think they’d have been auditioned for a role where almost all of the main characters have US accents. The reproduction evident in this audiobook sounded like kids playing cowboys in school playgrounds. It was really distracting.

The US accents!

Probably my favourite Brookmyre story. The narrator has a lovely natural voice, I could listen to that all day, but her American and Mexican gangster accents are like when a 9 year old puts on a play in the front room using accents they learned from cartoons. So very very bad. A waste of a good novel, and an Audible credit.

Excellent novel, ruined by the reading.

Great story and 2nd in a compelling trilogy. Whilst I enjoyed Ms Guthrie’s native Scottish accent, it was a strain to listen to her attempting American

Great story but challenging narration
