Jane Sagan: Soldier. Killer. Lover. Dreamer.

In John Scalzi's best-selling Old Man's War series of science-fiction novels, we see this warrior woman as the other characters see her: silent and strong, from the outside. But now The Sagan Diary shows us Sagan from another point of view - her own. As she prepares to leave military life and join her new husband and adopted daughter on a colony world, Sagan reflects on her life, in her own words - recalling friends, battles, and experiences; illustrating all the violence and wonder of her times; trying to fit "an entire life into this compressed space".

For fans of Scalzi's works, it's an intimate and surprising glimpse into one of his most popular characters. As read by Stephanie Wolfe, it's unlike any other science-fiction story you'll hear this year.

I love Scalzi and his world. It's generally action filled, humorous and insightful. This was more a tale of someone saying 'I'm different ... I can love' but it was hard to connect with either the character or world.

Passive tense, introspective and a tad boring.

Sorry Mr Scalzi, I love the work usually, but this is just ......tedious. Kudos for trying something different but it really didn't work. Also, and this is a personal thing and probably a bit silly of me, because obviously you'd get a woman to read a narrative by a woman.....but if course she doesn't SOUND like Sagan, as read by William Dufris!! So I'm disconnected right from the start. I did listen to the whole thing, as it was only an hour or so long, but it didn't improve. Sorry.

Tedious

A woman rambles on about nothing. There is no story, she just rambles on and on. Avoid.

Chances are you’re thinking about getting this because you enjoy Scalzi’s stories. Or because the old mans war series was entertaining and you want more. Or you’re a completionist...

You probably didn’t notice this audiobook is just over an hour long.

You probably think there is a story here.

All of these assumptions are wrong.
This is a brief internal monologue that adds nothing to the series. It detracts.
At best, this should have been appended to the end of Ghost Brigades and even then would have been skip-worthy.

Think of this as the “vagina monologues “ of the sci-fi world. Only with only the vaguest of hints of sci-fi.

The author notes in the preface this was a literary challenge for him. Well Mr Scalzi it was for me as a reader too, only not the nice kind.

Scalzi is one of my favourite authors and I do enjoy his work. But i did not find this enjoyable and in my view should never have been a stand alone purchase.

Avoid!
