About this listen

"I will love you until I am nothing but dust, and even then, I'll still love you."

When a mysterious man known only as The Stranger promises to return Kaid to her, Sellah is tasked with finding each one of her love's scattered bones, his severed body hidden in the darkest corners of the realm. The quest is an impossible task, yet she must make the dangerous journey alone using only her faith and fight. But the tasks at hand are brutal. They're battles not easily won.

Sellah doesn't care how treacherous the challenges are. She'll do whatever it takes because it was her fault Kaid was punished. Promised to the primordial goddess as a child, it was Sellah's sacred duty to remain pure and untouched. To be chosen as the goddess' vessel was the highest honor, one Sellah devoted her life to until the handsome thief Kaid broke into the temple. He obliterated her world, rewriting her future, and despite her vows, she couldn't resist the beautiful longing that ignited between them. Their forbidden friendship bloomed into a doomed romance, sending her and her beloved thief down a dark path of heartbreak, unspeakable danger, and a love that not even death could conquer.

The Scattered Bones is a dark fantasy romance where reverse Orpheus and Eurydice meets the Lord of the Rings with female-driven video game-style quest vibes. It's filled with epic quests, slow-burn forbidden romance, fantasy gods, dangerous landscapes and beasts, found family, heartbreak, triumph, and a love that gives the heroine the strength to survive.

This novella delivers a tragic love story wrapped in myth, magic, and devotion. Sellah is an compelling FMC, strong, stubborn, and quietly witty, and her love for Kaid drives the narrative with an intensity that hurts in the best way. The world itself is lush and immersive, filled with powerful gods, brutal quests, and moments that feel both epic and intimate. The flashbacks are some of the strongest elements, offering raw emotional punches and giving Sellah and Kaid's relationship real depth.

My biggest struggle was with the way the story begins mid journey. You're thrown straight into the aftermath without the context you need, and for a good chunk of the early pages you're waiting for answers that simply aren't there yet. Normally this "start in the middle" style can work, but here it left the pacing feeling slightly backwards; like I was reading the second half of the book before the first. Once the narrative catches up and the pieces start to fall into place, things improve significantly, but the initial disorientation did knock the experience down a notch for me.

By the end, I was completely invested. Sellah's devotion is powerful, her journey brutal and breathtaking, and the lore carried that perfect mix of devotion, divine politics, and forbidden lovers. Even the dynamic with "The Stranger" kept me guessing. For a quick standalone romantasy, this one delivers adventure, emotion, and a love story that defies death itself. A solid 4 stars and worth the read.

A good read

the plot is so good and the voice actor is incredible. However it feels like it's the bones of a story, some things could have been more luscious in description...but is it necessary?! I have no idea

I'm torn with how to feel

I had to download the audiobook so I could listen whilst I read the physical book because I was so engrossed in this book. Put off writing my dissertation just to make sure I read it in one go. My heart hurt the whole time but in the best way!
