About this listen

In this highly anticipated new novel, Diana Gabaldon brings back one of her most compelling characters: the unforgettable Lord John Grey - soldier, gentleman, and no mean hand with a blade. Set in the heart of the 18th century, Lord John's world is one of mystery and menace. Diana Gabaldon brilliantly weaves together the strands of Lord John's secret and public lives.

Capturing the lonely, tormented, and courageous career of a man who fights for his crown, his honor, and his own secrets, Diana Gabaldon delivers breathtaking human drama, proving once again that she can bring history to life in a way few novelists ever have.

I am passionate about all of Diana Gabaldon's books, the John Grey one's don't quite match my enjoyment of the main Outlander books, but they do give a lot of background information to one of the main Characters, namely Lord John Grey. I'd expected to enjoy this one more as it is about an adventure he has with Jamie Fraser, but unfortunately the narrators have spoiled it somewhat for me. I'd gotten used to Jeff Woodman reading the John Grey novels. His Cornish accent in one was somewhat off-putting, and his Scottish one in this is somewhat unpredictable, for want of a better word. The book may have sounded better if the 'Jamie' parts had been read by a Scottish actor, but Mr Holmes has a very English accent. He manages the Irish accent very well, but sometimes when reading as Jamie he can sound fairly credibly Scottish, but at other times he makes him sound Yorkshire, or, more often, Irish, which I've found rather disappoining and frustrating, to the point that I have decided to put aside the ipod and pick up my hardback instead. In this instance I shall have to enjoy Diana's hard work the old fashioned way

Disappointing rendition of Diana's work

The narrator spoils this book and makes it boring to listen to,which is a shame as I have enjoyed the whole of the outlander series. I believe it as well written and I did want to know more about Lord John but it has put me off getting any more of these books.

The narrator is good for other works but nothing with a Scottish accent as it all comes out Irish and Jamie no longer sounds like Jamie. Lord John should sound very English with the old plumb in the mouth type in this book it just doesn't happen.

Good book shame about the narrator

This is my favourite Lord John book and I was so disappointed that Jamie, a Scot, a Highland Scot, speaks with an Irish accent.

Disappointed in the narration

Unfortunate choice of narrator for this and others in the series. I have had this audible book for several months and have really struggled to listen to the story which is nevertheless enjoyable.

Very distracting "Scottish" accent all through

Another well written and researched book by Gabaldon, following Lord John Grey & Jamie Fraser during his time at Hellwater..
Marred only by the atrocious attempts by the narrator at a Scottish accent. He makes Jamie sound Irish at best. Very irritating.

A trip to Ireland for Jamie
