Summary

Discover the extraordinary diaries of the real Anne Lister: the inspiration for Gentleman Jack and Emma Donoghue's novel Learned By Heart.

When this volume of Anne Lister's diaries was first published in 1988, it was hailed as a vital piece of lost lesbian history. The editor, Helena Whitbread, had spent years painstakingly researching and transcribing Lister's extensive journals, much of which were written in an elaborate code - what Lister called her 'crypthand', which allowed her to record her life in intimate, and at times, explicit, detail. Until then, Anne Lister's lesbianism had been supressed or hinted at; this was the first time her story had been told. Anne Lister defied the role of nineteenth century womanhood: she was bold, fiercely independent, a landowner, industrialist, traveller and lesbian - a woman who lived her life on her own terms.

These diaries include the years 1816-1824.

A fascinating look into british and european history from an every day perspective and the life of a particularly fascinating woman. Especially recommended to anyone who enjoyed the show Gentleman Jack, as this is the diary of her earlier life.

I hope they make an audio book for the second volume!

This book just didnt flow. it was not presented as a story like the program like expected it went back and forth like a documentary. someone reading out the extracts fromnthr diary as written and thej discussing them. Gutted audible wouldn't give me my credit back that's 3 rubbish books ive had recently and 3 wasted credits. I get that thr author didnt want to change much and keep it as original as possible byt it therefore lacked any story line and any flow. The diary entries were brief, short and to the point so after watching thr TV program which was excellent this in comparison was a disappointment.

Disappointed
