The fabulous first Shopaholic novel by international No. 1 bestselling author Sophie Kinsella!
Meet Rebecca Bloomwood. She's a financial journalist who spends all day writing articles on how to manage money wisely. Her own method of managing money is to hide her Visa bills under the bed and hope they'll disappear. Becky just can't stop shopping.
She knows she has to do something: either Cut Back or Make More Money. Except Cutting Back seems impossible, and her attempts to Make More Money just get her into trouble. Her bank manager is sending her sterner and sterner letters, her credit cards are being declined, her Mum and Dad have no idea… what is she going to do?

I used to love this book but now I am older, Becky is just so irritating to me. She's so childish and a bit of a liar! Nell Hudson was MADE to read audiobooks. I loved her reading this. She made the story so much better

Great narration

Read this in print around 25 years ago and can remember I laughed out loud. Becky and I had nothing in common then, still don't, but it was a silly, colourful piece of fiction and I enjoyed the escapism of it all. It hasn't really aged well given today's technologies but it is what it is, an entertaining story which demands nothing from the listener. The narrator did a very good job making it an easy listen. It was a free book but I’m not tempted to pay for the series. I’ll leave that to the past!

I found the book rather average, but the performance was stunning, I can’t praise it enough, lots of different voices and accents really bringing the book to life. I found the main character very unrelatable and felt quite exasperated by her silly behaviour. Like Bridget Jones, she is inexplicably attractive and talented but her uncontrolled spending makes her quite unlikable. I also very much dislike the lies she tells at the drop of a hat. I’m glad things came good in the end but she didn’t deserve it and really needed to learn her lesson more thoroughly; I suppose that’s what the rest of this series will be about. It was interesting to listen to this book so long after it was written, the lack of technology and low prices making it seem quite vintage. I decided that you need to multiply the numbers by about five to bring them up to date, except for the spices for the curry, which seemed full-priced already.

Fantastic performance

The main character in the book is quite frustrating with their thoughts and decisions and it’s quite predictable what’s going to happen. The audible reading was great and actually made it a bit more interesting than it would be reading it.

Quite a frustrating read/listening

I was worried it would be outdated, it really made me laugh out loud. The background atmosphere pepperd with talk of fax and cheques made me want to return to that beautiful stage in time. A retro, feel good take on life.
