Summary

"Few audiobooks warrant turning off all distractions, closing one's eyes, and simply listening to the story unfold. Narrator Caitlin Davies creates just that experience as she passionately guides listeners through this gripping story of ambition, love, and desire." (AudioFile Magazine)

Tricia Levenseller, author of Daughter of the Pirate King, is back with an epic YA tale of ambition and love in The Shadows Between Us....

"They’ve never found the body of the first and only boy who broke my heart. And they never will."

Alessandra is tired of being overlooked, but she has a plan to gain power:

  1. Woo the Shadow King.
  2. Marry him.
  3. Kill him and take his kingdom for herself.

No one knows the extent of the freshly crowned Shadow King’s power. Some say he can command the shadows that swirl around him to do his bidding. Others say they speak to him, whispering the thoughts of his enemies. Regardless, Alessandra knows what she deserves, and she’s going to do everything within her power to get it.

But Alessandra’s not the only one trying to kill the king. As attempts on his life are made, she finds herself trying to keep him alive long enough for him to make her his queen - all while struggling not to lose her heart. After all, who better for a Shadow King than a cunning, villainous queen?

"Tricia Levenseller’s latest, The Shadows Between Us, is a decadent and wickedly addictive fantasy, full of schemes and court intrigue, and delightful descriptions of food, which I am always a fan of." (Kendare Blake, number-one New York Times best-selling author of the Three Dark Crowns series)

From the thousand love-stories we all know - this one stands out. The Shadows Between us features a rather villainous pair of people on a rather unusual way to their happiness. The story delights the reader with the guessing game of a crime, the delights of great character development and depth, as well as the joys of a love-story - with a refreshing kick-ass heroine; far away from the so often featured damsel in distress.
The reader performs amazingly in my opinion although it took some getting used to in the beginning - but there is a reason why you can sample the audiobook before buying it.

I enjoyed this story immensely and would recommended it to everyone!

Any political fantasy with a romance trope needs something distinctive so it's not just categorised as a Sarah J. Maas clone. The Shadows Between Us does this very successfully by having a truly unlikeable protagonist - in fact she would be more of an antagonist if the book wasn't from her perspective. The narrator was particularly adept at portraying Alessandra's haughty, disdainful, condescending attitude, and it was so refreshing to have a believable female anti-hero. She was not just a woman who has stamina, or special training, or some superpower, but circumstances that turned her vile and amoral. A manic pixie dream girl she is not! If anything, <spoiler> the shadow king takes on that role when he helps her to overcome the barriers she's put up to defend her vulnerability. </spoiler>

The political aspect is very much a background plot to support the relationship aspect, but the villain x villain character development that I didn't mind the politics taking a supporting role to this.

Kudos again to Caitlin Davies for amazing narration, that was the addictive icing on the couldn't put down cake.

A delicious anti-hero female lead
