About this listen

Winner of the 2015 Petrona Award.

A Sunday Times '100 best crime novels and thrillers since 1945' pick!

The most chilling novel yet from the Queen of Nordic Noir, not to be missed for fans of Jo Nesbo and Stieg Larsson.

'Mummy dead.' The child's pure treble was uncomfortably clear. It was the last thing Brynjar—and doubtless the others—wanted to hear at that moment. 'Daddy dead.' It got worse. 'Adda dead. Bygga dead.' The child sighed and clutched her grandmother's leg. 'All dead.'

A luxury yacht arrives in Reykjavik harbour with nobody on board. What has happened to the crew, and to the family who were on board when it left Lisbon?

Thora Gudmundsdottir is hired by the young father's parents to investigate, and is soon drawn deeper into the mystery. What should she make of the rumours saying that the vessel was cursed, especially given that when she boards the yacht she thinks she sees one of the missing twins? Where is Karitas, the glamorous young wife of the yacht's former owner? And whose is the body that has washed up further along the shore?

Not usually a murder mystery book fan, altbough I like them more on TV, this was gripping. Really got into the characters helped by reader's personalised voices (tricky to do for so many characters). Moving between story unfolding and its investigation worked really well. There were some untidy ends maybe as ending was so surprising but that just made you want to go back and hear/read it again.

Absolutely gripping

Loved this book, the usual gripping mystery and flawless narration, this time with dual settings each with different characters was well executed, both by the author and the narrator. This series gets better with every book, have already bought the next one

My Favourite of the Series So Far

This wasn’t as good as the earlier books in the series. Narrator was average. I struggled with some of her character voices.

Disappointing

Read this book a while ago and loved the eerie, ominous atmosphere and the element/hinting at the supernatural so typical to Yrsa, so eagerly awaited the audiobook to be released. So disappointed! The narration is so light and even upbeat that there’s very little sense of danger left. With the ominous tension, atmosphere and feeling there might be something supernatural going on gone, for me the main attraction of the book disappeared- and I returned it.

Too upbeat narration strips sense of danger
