About this listen

The Cleveland Street scandal, involving a homosexual brothel reputedly visited by the queen's grandson, shocked Victorian Britain in 1889. This is the first full-length account of one of its key players, Jack Saul, a working-class, Irish-Catholic rent boy who worked his way into the upper echelons of the aristocracy, and wrote the notorious pornographic memoir The Sins of the Cities of the Plain. Glenn Chandler, creator of Taggart, explores his colorful but tragic life and reveals for the first time the true story about what really went on behind the velvet curtains of Number 19 Cleveland Street.

Fascinating piece of gay history. Incredible research & detail. Crying out for Channel 4 serialisation. Excellent

Brilliant

This is truly wonderful. I love all things Victorian, especially those topics that are hugely below the pale. This is beautifully and respectfully written and delivered magnificently. I’ve learned so much and come away feeling very humbled.

I didn’t want this to end

This is a fascinating if not somewhat explicit book…But then it’s all in the title isn’t it…I like the fact that the writer hasn’t been afraid to write so openly and hasn’t toned it down for the more prudish listener. 5 stars.

Brilliant.

This would have been far better structured as an historical novel.
As it stands its a somewhat messy bio that includes quite a lot of uninteresting padding.
The audi quality feels cheap and grating too.

I skipped most of it.

Meh: Disappointed not a Novel but a budget bio.

The narration really lets this story down. Mispronounciations all over the place. Savoy with emphasis on first syllable? Malta as written instead of mawlta? Narrator sounds disinterested.
Btw, The George is on South Great George's St, NOT South Great King's St. Otherwise it would be known as The King.
That aside, Jack Saul is a very interesting character, but there must be many unknown stories just like his.

very interesting story, terribly told
