About this listen

The old gods are growing restless. An ancient evil is stirring. Can they stop the coming storm?

Mercenary Casia Greythorne cares about two things: completing whatever her latest job is and earning enough coin to buy the expensive medicine that's keeping her mentor alive.

So when the king himself offers her a job, she can't resist the massive reward he offers - even if it means working with Captain Elander, the arrogant, mysterious right-hand to that king.

Her partner may be infuriating, but at least their mission seems simple and quick enough: investigate the origins of the strange plague that's been ravaging their empire, help find a cure, and then call it a day.

But in a land brimming with old magic and meddling gods, nothing is ever that simple, and nothing is ever what it seems.

As the bodies pile up and strange monsters begin to wreak havoc throughout the realms, Cas and Elander will have to work together to protect their world whether they like it or not. Because one thing is clear: Something ancient and evil is stirring in the shadows of that world.

And their empire will not survive its full unleashing.

At first I hated the Scottish accent but as the book went on it grew on me, although the narrator definitely looses it at some points. What redeemed it for me is whenever a character shouted in the book - the narrator actually sounded like she shouted too.

Took a few chapters to get into it but loved it!

I really enjoyed the narrators style and accents. I assume the male characters accent was meant to be Scottish but as a Scot it missed the mark for me and ended up sounding like a Scottish/ Russian and a bit English mix but I absolutely loved it! Loved the story too, don't think I've ever listened to an audiobook so solidly! it's a 'page turner'. Can't wait to read the next one.

Wonderful narration of a great story.

The story is pretty good and it's entertaining. I like the world that is being built, the magic and the characters (though I wish her friends had been in it more), but the accent of Olander is really annoying and I wish that it wasn't a bad Scottish accent and just used an accent she was more comfortable doing. It's a bit annoying, but I still enjoyed the book, I just think it would have been better without that accent in there.

good story, terrible accent.

the book was good if lacking in some areas. the story and magic was interesting. the characters enjoyable, even if the side characters where a bit underdeveloped. the reveal at the end was part painfully obvious and part nicely hinted to but still a bit surprising. what I did not like was the romance.

I can see some cemestry there but any time cass thinks about him it's soo annoying. I wish they would have skiped all the time she just reapeated that he hot. or thinking back to past encounters and daydreaming about that. when they actually interact with one another it's okay, but we are stuck in cass head and have to listen to her inner monolog far to much.

Good

I liked the ideas of this. An interesting magic/religion system a bit of a mystery. But not enough follow through. Too many characters and not enough character development. I could easily cut out 2-3 and it wouldn’t change the story.

Some things also felt rushed. No chemistry between the romantic leads. And it often felt like the main character was over reacting.

Narrator was good if too weirdly emotional at moments. Not bad but I won’t be continuing the series.

Good ideas but…
