Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

Take control of your brain health with science-backed strategies to help you prevent cognitive decline and Alzheimer’s disease – whichever stage of life you’re in.
We take care of our hearts and joints as we age – but what about our brains? With people struggling to focus, and dementia and Alzheimer’s on the rise, Dr Wood offers a bold, empowering message: our brains are not destined to decline. In fact, with the right stimulus, they can adapt, strengthen and even improve over time.
In THE STIMULATED MIND, Dr Wood introduces his science-backed '3-S Model' – Stimulation, Sleep and Nutrient Supply – as the foundation for lifelong brain health. Forget expensive supplements or rigid 'biohacks'. Instead, Dr Wood focuses on the everyday factors that truly matter: how we eat, move, sleep, connect with others and handle stress.
Blending cutting-edge neuroscience with his work coaching elite athletes and professionals, Dr Wood offers a deeply practical, optimistic roadmap for cognitive longevity – helping us not just protect our brains from decline, but expand our mental capacity as we age.

Critic reviews

Dr Tommy Wood is one of the medical voices I respect the most. He is incredibly knowledgeable on a wide variety of different topics, and has a real skill at translating the latest science in a clear and understandable way that has real world application for the average person who is simply seeking to live a healthier life. In a world where we have a growing explosion of ‘experts’ promoting different and conflicting ideas, Dr Wood’s approach is underpinned by logic, nuance and balance. As global health declines, Dr Wood’s voice urgently needs amplifying.
The Stimulated Mind challenges the idea that cognitive decline is inevitable. Drawing from cutting-edge research and years of experience coaching elite athletes, Dr Wood reveals how the brain can actually get stronger with age – if we give it the right inputs and he provides a science-backed, actionable blueprint to shape a sharper, more adaptable brain – optimising your cognitive abilities not just for today, but for decades to come.
Dr Tommy Wood has spent years at the intersection of neuroscience and performance, helping people build more resilient bodies and more durable minds. The Stimulated Mind is a hopeful and practical guide for building and maintaining brain health at every stage of life.

He communicates science well and offers a genuinely interesting perspective on the human brain, but these chunks of information are arranged between a vast quantity of anecdotes on his academic credentials, sporting accolades, lifting stats and his various dream jobs, as well remarkably self-satisfied reflections on his social and romantic life.

By chapter 5 or 6, chugging through the bragging becomes its own endurance sport. Is there anything he doesn’t consider himself elite at? We will never know because he at no point runs out of steam for the topic of himself. If you are his “beautiful wife” reading this, you have my full sympathy and advanced permission to quote anything I said in the divorce.

Should you be middle class enough to have been socialised in how to humour men with outsized egos, the neuroscience may be worth it. If, like me, you are far too working class and middle-aged for this level of vanity, brace accordingly.

4.8/5 for the interesting science. 2/5 for the tedious ego.

Informative, but self-aggrandising
