The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde was first published in 1866 and has gone on to become one of the most told Gothic stories of all time.

In this new recording, Paapa Essiedu breathes new life into the classic tale.

Robert Louis Stevenson's dark psychological fantasy follows a respectable London lawyer as he investigates the strange relationship between his old friend Dr Henry Jekyll and the evil Edward Hyde.

Its sensitive portrayal of man's dual nature is moving, beautiful and terrifying in equal measure.

I'm not a huge fan of this story (it does go on!), however it is told with an expression and vitality that brings it to life; I found it dull to read, and much better to listen to.

Excellent narration

Well of course I'd heard the old adages about Jekyll and Hyde, but had never looked into the original story. To be honest it's only cos it's on Audible's list of "Included" titles that I gave this a shot and am I glad I did! Took a while to get into it, especially as the narrator has a peculiar kind of contemptuous sneering drawl which almost made me give up (and some of his character voices eg Paul were just weird at times), but the story soon gripped me and I couldn't wait to finish it off. A masterful insight into human nature and the good and evil that resides within us, this is primarily a novella about religion not secular psychology.

Masterful insight into human nature

For clarity, I only listened to an hour of this before I had to stop. The story didn't grip me and unfortunately, I just couldn't get into it. Sadly the narration felt bland and didn't engage. The character voices were better but it still didn't work for me. There was drama in the voices but not in the narration. Overall, it just wasn't my cup of tea.

Not for me.

I had this story on my TBR for years, as it is a short novel I was able to finish in a day.
The narrator is much clearer than others I had tried out; mumbling is a pet peeve of mine, and will make me DNF a book in minutes.
As the story is so famous, with various retellings in the media over the years I knew the general storyline, but I was surprised at how this ended. It provides a great example of the hidden depths of peoples' psyche, temptation, and how "monstrous" people can be once given anonymity, or in this case an alter-ego, thus keeping their reputation in tact.

The narrator is much better in this edition

The unnerving classic, read with powerful restraint and beauty by one of the best stage actors of his generation. An absolute treat.

Powerful and disturbing
