Summary

Sara
Everyone in Sugar Creek knows me as the girl with the fragile heart. I’ve worked my whole life to prove I’m normal, strong, and independent. And I thought I was until a simple illness knocks me down and reminds me I’ll never escape my limits. The worst part? I can’t bring myself to tell JD, the boy who’s been my protector since kindergarten and the man I’ve secretly loved for years. He gave everything to chase his NFL dream, and I refuse to be the reason he throws it away.

JD
Everyone in Sugar Creek knows me as the football star with a ticket out. What they don’t know is that every yard I’ve run, every play I’ve fought for has all been for Sara Porter, my angel, the girl who once believed in me when I didn’t deserve it. Now the draft is almost here, and I should be focused, but Sara is slipping away. She thinks she’s protecting me by pushing me off. But I’ve waited my whole life to prove one thing: no dream is worth having without her in it.

She blames herself for her dad's lost dreams and won't be responsible for mine, but I blame myself for not telling her sooner that she's more important than a game. Can we speak our minds and share our hearts, or is it already too late?

THE SUGAR CREEK BLAME GAME is a small-town, sweet, best friends to lovers romance with medical and sports elements set in the Seasons of Sugar Creek world. You'll see old friends and make new ones as you laugh, cry, and root for Sara and JD.

The Sugar Creek Blame Game is the sixth book in Ford's Seasons of Sugar Creek. This sweet, small-town, best friends to lovers romance featuring Sara Porter and JD Sawyer can be appreciated as a standalone.

Sara and JD met when they were just kids but she left an impression on him. They quickly became best friends, always there for each other through the years. While never saying the words, it was clear that the two shared a deep love for one another. JD wanted a future with Sara but wanted to be able to give her the world, and decided not to make his move until he could offer her a future she deserved. He spent his life playing football, trying to be the best player he could be. His goal was to get signed and then get the girl. Sara loves him right back but when she has a health scare, she convinces herself that she needs to set him free. She wants him to have the future he deserves, which doesn't include tending to a partner with health concerns.

This is a sweet story. I listened to the audiobook narrated by Jess Wright. Jess did a pretty good job portraying both Sara and JD however in an ideal world, I'd have wanted different narrators for the different characters. The writing was engaging, and I found myself hoping these two flawed characters would get over their perceived hurdles and find their way to one another.

Overall this rates 3.5 stars from me.

On a best-friends-to-lovers premise, The Sugar Creek Blame Game delivers a story that feels both comforting and emotionally grounded. The transition from friendship to something more is handled with a lot of care, and there’s a genuine sense of history between the characters.

Totally loved the coach and how he tried to guide both Sara and JD. 💙💙💙

As an audiobook, the experience is enjoyable and easy to sink into. The narration brings out the emotional beats and enhances the cozy tone of the story.

Overall, this is a sweet, comforting story that focuses on friendship, growth, and the quiet realization that love has been there all along. It’s a great pick as a small-town romance, low angst, and character-driven stories.
