God did not create we homemakers to be inexhaustible housework machines. Instead, He lovingly created us to be affectionate and soft wives and mothers. A small child with a temperature and headache will later remember how you cuddled them on the sofa, made their favourite snacks and read them stories. They will not recollect fingerprints in the dust on the TV or the occasional cobweb in a ceiling corner.
While this is not a self help book or a guide to perfect housekeeping there are some invaluable hints and hacks on accepting God’s invitation to escape the “perfect home” comparison trap. I am so grateful Hilary for her showing me the that hours of evening scrolling and examining the carefully edited videos and photos of influencers’ painstakingly curated and aesthetically appealing home and gardens was slowly eating away at my self confidence as a wife, mum and homemaker. The Tension of Tidy enables its reader to listen to God and learn to listen to His quiet voice encouraging you instead of the loud and relentless bombardment of online and magazine “housewives” who project an unobtainable level of ironed laundry, sparkling floors and pristine home decor.
I am now with, God’s grace, able to balance my Mary and Martha traits and make my home into a loving, welcoming and nurturing sanctuary for my family. I don’t wince if our grandchildren put their feet on our sofa. There is no more cringing when our dog sheds her coat over the living room rug. Instead, my family and guests can relax and enjoy being gladly greeted and received with genuine affection and enthusiasm. I feel able to practice Christian hospitality and enjoy our home instead of flitting about nervously trying to hide my laundry or polish the cutlery!
